Manual and Automatic
Kippa-Dee - July 24th, 2004 at 04:28 PM

Hey all.

Just lately been noticing, I've only ever seen one Beetle that was auto, and the rest manual. Kombi's I wouldn't expect auto, and Golf's I've only seen a small percentage of Auto's too.

Why is that?

Are there many auto bugs?

Cheers

my little brother has one, but they are a minority as they are not a true auto they are a 3 speed stick shift, so they have no clutch pedal and are actuated by a set of contacts on the stick

There seems to be more automatic Kombis 1.8l etc...
Amazed Me too... especially at VW shows...
Not many fully auto type 3s... fairly rare..
a few stick shift semi auto Beetles about...
probably a very small percentage of Beetles sold though...
Most were sold in 1968, their first year, then not so many until the last ones in 1976...
although I haven't actually heard of any after 1972 in Australia... and many Parts have to be bought from the USA..
as the Auto Stick Beetles are very common in the USA....

hey lee! racking my decal:P

the auto sticks are great fun to drive! and you know 100% that is was assembled in Germany.. better steel, higher resistance to rust, and really the Auto Stick is way ahead of its time!

ofcourse that time was 36 years ago.. but still.. a really good drive:)

hey kippa.. your near rowville/dande arntcha? if u want u can come for a ride in my auto-stick, and see how u like it

68AutoBug - August 9th, 2004 at 10:53 PM

I haven't seen many type 3 automatics...
actually the only ones I have seen are at VW shows like the VW Nationals... I had never seen one until a few years ago.
There a few semi auto Beetles out there as many people have contacted Me... still a small percentage of Beetles made...
The semi autos were also used in Karmann Ghia coupes & Cabriolets... sold in the USA ..
