How do I know what cc's my motor is?
CHADMYSTER - July 26th, 2004 at 05:11 PM

Guy's and girls I have a 69 beetle and i am going to take the motor out to do some work (new seals etc) but i wanted to be sure of the motor size. The deck lid says 1500s but i have been told it is not the original lid (later model) the guy i bought it off said 1500 but he may have been wrong. will the engine number help me?

Hi

Engine number will help, a 1500 Beetle should have an H engine number. The issue gets confusing from there on. If your number is all numbers you have police engine number, given when fitting a new motor without an engine number. If you could desribe your motor, is the manifold 1 piece? Its a 1500. If it has a 3 piece manifold, centre T section, alloy ends? It could be a 1300 or 1600. Another problem is that motor could have been bored out or stroked, so the only way to be sure is to measure bore & stroke. If you buying a full gasket set they usually cater for all size motors in the one pack.

CHADMYSTER - July 26th, 2004 at 05:30 PM

bump

The "Bible" does not carry any MC prefixed engines in either types I, II, III, or IV.
There are engine numbers in just the stated numeric range, but they are with 1959 type I beetles of 36hp from AUG to Dec that year- not original 1500 engines by any means. Looks like a 1200 been worked on.

I have a 71 beetle and its stated engine number begins with AD, just as the "Bible" says it should.

Give us your chasis number for another try.

CHADMYSTER - July 26th, 2004 at 07:21 PM

chassis number is 119290416

CHADMYSTER - July 26th, 2004 at 07:22 PM

it is 69 semiauto

11CAB - July 26th, 2004 at 07:24 PM

Yeah its a 69, but the only way to know for sure is to have owned it from new......or pull it apart and measure it.

bobupp - July 26th, 2004 at 07:36 PM

AS 11CAB says, it is 68/69, and the engine should be a H5414586 to H59----- series. Chasis number is spot on , engine though......

CHADMYSTER - July 26th, 2004 at 07:43 PM

you would think the MC prefix would mean something though

lulu94 - July 28th, 2004 at 05:57 PM

if it makes you feel any better it took me ages to work out what engine i had and im still not 100 percent sure as it is an all number engine number, good luck, it is nice to know

"All number" engine numbers ended in 65 in TYPE I's. Give us the number and its original size can be told.

lulu94 - July 31st, 2004 at 11:14 PM

hey bobupp my engine number is 126-019142, cheers if you can help.

All this info is top notch, but the if the motor has ever been apart or rebuilt it wont help you that much. You need to know what the bore and stroke are on the engine.
e.g. a bore of 92mm with a stroke of 69mm is 1835cc or 82mm stroke with 92mm bore would be 2180cc. Or a rough way of doing it is with a swept volume test.
:)

Can't agree more Desert Moose.
And to educate us all the 12........ series engines were built from Dec 1955 to Dec 1956 and were ORIGINALLY 36hp.

Like you said, who knows what has happened to it in the last nearly 50 years?

CHADMYSTER - August 1st, 2004 at 06:51 PM

i want to replace seals and gaskets whilst motor is out so does one size fit all. thats why i wanted to know the size!

Chadmyster, get a complete gasket set like Steve said in his first reply. Caters for all engines... Bill

bobupp - August 7th, 2004 at 10:07 PM

To bajabug,

idiots guide says this would be a Dec 1963 - Jul 1964 40hp 1200. Yep you are right.

bajabug69 - August 7th, 2004 at 10:17 PM

Thanks for that bobupp
