71superbug - September 10th, 2004 at 09:11 PM

hey i am looking into doing a 1600 turbo for my beetle. what kind of turbo would be suitable. can it be oil cooled? which requires an external waste gate or should it not be oil cooled?.

any ideas would be appreciated

thanks

Oil cooled or not oil cooled???????? WTF
Dude, turbos are oil "lubricated" they are not "Oil Cooled"
Some such as Garret T2, T25, T28 and so on are water cooled but all of them have an oil supply to lubricate them.
They are either water cooled or not.
Oil cooled???????????
Just choose a turbo that is capable of providing the H.P you are chasing at the RPM you predict factoring in the cubic capacity of the engine you are going to use.
As a start, a Garret T02 from a pulsar turbo (non-watercooled, the watercooled variant is a T2)) would be a good start.

its because i was looking on ebay for a t3 turbo. and i came across this. i talk to ian. he uses a gt25?. but thats too big for my liking at the moment.
to quote the guy on this link "The turbo is oil cooled suits external wastgate only"

i was confused when i saw this.

anyone know wat this turbo is like?

The one on ebay was originally advertised for a Porsche 911 and at a T3 is way too big for a 1600 beetle. You would have to rev it hard to get some boost. Remember a big turbo is useless on a small motor!

I am building up a motor for an ex-Shimo kit that uses an IHI RHB6 turbo that I believe is used on Isuzu NPR trucks.

Have a look at http://www.lowbugget.com  for a stock 1600 turbo setup using a 300zx turbo.

I would recommend a T25 sized turbo and unless you have a subi motor defnately oil cooled!

The type of turbo depends on whether you are going draw through or blow through

Cheers

Steve

You need to find T2 from an Exa. This will run upto a 1916 with no probs. Other options would be a ihi rhb5 or 6 from the mitsubishi cordia. I think you will find the TO2 is the watercooled version as my T2 was not. At 1600 there would be no great difference with draw thru or blow thru. Get a copy of turbomania and read this cover to cover it will help immensely.

Good luck

Nope.
TO2 is the older non-watercooled type.
T2 is the water cooled type.

If yours was a non-water cooled type then it was definitely a TO2.

Another variant that would work well is the GT15. These are off (Im pretty sure) the low boost Volvos. Physically a tiny little turbo the would be sensational on a dak dak at moderate boost.
Also the Laser TX3 turbo blower may be another alternative. I cant remember what is fitted to them now....my bad!
