Has anyone fitted a Type 3 Auto gearbox into a Superbeetle or would a Kombi Auto gearbox be easier to fit? Any info appreciated. James
bump
The Kombi one is too big and heavy, the type 3 one is similar but has an alloy diff housing, it can be done but is a lot of work getting it to fit.
isnt Oval Glenn's brother doing this for his race car????
The problem is the * manual gear box horns * there not wide to take the auto box .I have seen others that cut the horns and replace > fab new ones .lots of work but would be a good ride . seagull
As Dave said too big too heavy also too long
Ok, got the gist the kombi is too heavy, somewhere someone mentioned that the type 3 might be too long. Already know the horns need to be modified, just need to know if the length is a major issue.
The position of the gearbox naturally positions the engine,
so it would be fairly critical... within 25mm of so....
The CV Joint axles shouldn't be a problem...
There was a Beetle with type 3 auto on ebay about 6 months ago.... I wonder if They are on this site....
the builder that is.....

here you go
this is the slowest subaru in australia !
I do know these things
I just read an article on putting an auto into a type 1 beetle somewhere... it was done by a mechanic not the owner....
I have read a few articles... some says its very difficult and others say its not too hard... one fellow said the body had to be cut above the
gearbox....
I'll see what I can find out....

on the same track, is it feasable to put a manual IRS kombi box into a beetle? has anyone seen it done?
I can imagine all the problems associated with this mod but I would like to know if it is remotely possible

Chewy,
Get in touch with Custom off road (forum sponsor). They have all the info and kits to do it also!
Needs a modified mount, adaptor for gear changed and modified axles to take kombi CV's.
why not just fitting a semi auto box from a semi auto beetle??
No probs with fitting.
