I'd like to fit a start button to crank the engine over rather than twist the key.

Anyone into electrics that can help me out at all?

easy done.
just make sure you get one that can handle the current.
a little piss ant one won't do it.
if you get reall tricky, you can have a toggle switch for on/off, and a push button start.

all you need to do is turn your ign. on, make sure the car is out of gear.
pop the bonnet so you can get to the back of the ign. switch.
get a small piece of wire, only needs to be a few cm long.
by process of elimination, jag the ends of the wire into the terminals on the switch to see which ones need to be connected to make 'er kick over.
these are the terminals to connect to the connections on the push button.

When my turn key barrell broke i decided that a push button start was easier ... mind you this is in a kombi ... all I did was pull out the little connector that runs up the side of the steering column. Figured out which wires turnt the engine over, placed some connectors in to the small gap between the connections and ran it to a small button placed discretley on the dash.

vwulla! All good, the end result was that i still had to use the key to turn on the power then push the button to turn over the engine.

u can just buy a new ignition switch and still use the same key.

I hsave my ignition switch and a start button mounted in a box between my seats. I can crank the engine without it starting which is handy for getting oil pressure/fuel pressure up etc

My thinking is this.

I have my normal key which gives me power. Have a toggle switch or similar for the fuel pump dash mounted next to the 60 amp start button i have.

I have already put a hidden ignition cut out in the rear and will add another to the fuel system when i fit the pump.

So basically i just need to find the wire that fires the starter at the ignition switch track it back abit and patch in the switch.

We had electrical switch problems in an old hillman. The key would kick in the starter however we had to twist two wires together which were secure to the dash with electrical tape for safety. Worked fine. One day somepeople tried to steal it and forgot to twiddle the wires together so they flattened our battery, damn inconsiderate.:bounce

I run a push button starter in my Baja. Use a toggle switch to give ignition. It 's good for doind things like compression testing, timing and watching valves work etc.

I have mine mounted on the centre dash but am in the process of moving them and changing the toggle to a push/pull with an internal red led. I also have my oil light wired into an 80db dick smith 12v buzzer. Sounds whenever the ignition is on from the far side (Front) for the fire wall. Far more racey but more importantly - lets me know when the oil light is saying "Hey fulla - this hills too steep".

A good word of advice from my mechanic. I you do plan to bypass your ignition - make sure you remove your agnition locking pin so in five years time one day the locking pin dosent accidently find is's way back into place.
