Dog house Fan housings
57kombi - March 10th, 2005 at 04:51 PM

I was wondering if anyone has converted a normal dog house fan housing to accept a type 4 oil cooler and does it make the engine run cooler.

Cheers
Dave

Dave go to

http://www.splitbusaustralia.com/update.htm#23window

and scroll down the page. You have to widen the doghouse
housing by about 15mm...

It's well worthwhile for a bus, although you also need
to upgrade the fan the the widest from L Bug, superbug.
This mod (and reasonable comp ratio)
does make a big diff esp. in a bus.

Rob.
Thats what I want to do. Cant I keep the original fan.
Why do I have to go for the later one if I am just altering the dog house bit to fit around the cooler.

Good to see I am on the right track.
Also good that others like yourself have had these problems and know how to overcome them.

Dave

i run a t4 cooler on a 1600tp and i modified the housing myself by adding about an inch of sheet metal at the bend

I think what he means is, make sure you have the best/highest flowing fan fitted before you muck around with the oil cooler mod. ie: only modify a late S/Bug fan housing and fan. MAKE SURE you have the correct fan fitted to the correct fan housing, too.. it's no use having a narrower 1300 fan in a 1600TP housing, for instance...

Is it in a Kombi or Beetle?

Yes my bus. 1600ish twinport from a kombi , has an AF block
Is getting very hot.
Have checked the timing and its max at 30degrees.
Has extractors.
So I thought of fitting the type 4 cooler.

well i only have a sbug so i forgot to mention that. it works well and the car is cooler than normal

Doug Sweetman - March 11th, 2005 at 10:01 AM

I've run the type 4 cooler on my 1835 which has not always been in the best of tune (in an L bug), and its never gotten above 120, even doing 110 down the freeway on a 40 degree day.

So, yes I reckon they make a good difference.

O.K.
Anyone got a s-bug housing and fan????

Check your jetting, too - S/bug jetting is too lean for a Kombi. I assume you don't have silly things like 'power' pulleys, or modified gearing (affects fan speed vs road speed)?

keep in mind, too, that a larger oil cooler surface 'air escape' area means less cooling air is delivered to the barrels and heads, which is where the heat really comes from, innit?! ;)

I ran a type 4 cooled and modified shroud in my Oval for a while, I found it made no difference at all.

If your Kombi is running hot, I would recomend an external cooled mounted in the air flow under the car, even with a fan. That will make a difference. make sure you use an oil thermostate so it doesn't run too cold.

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? - March 11th, 2005 at 08:06 PM

I did this mod on my last baja type 1 engine and it dropped 5-8 deg and as for the fan housing what you have to look for is a little air scoop inside the fan housing were the air is picked up and taken out top the cooler no scoop bad find one that has one, jetting should be around a 130 main and make sure there is no vacum leaks these will make it run hot and it should have the thickest fan you can find i can remember the measurements of hand

I think I will have to take it to a dyno to check if its running lean or not,
There is a lot of black at the exhaust.

If the exhaust is black, You shouldn't have to worry about about being lean.....

The fan from the doghouse cooler is slightly wider than the
NON doghouse oil cooler fan....

so if You change over to a doghouse fan shroud, You will also need the wider Fan.....
otherwise Your engine will get hotter.... as air that goes thru the doghouse oil cooler goes outside the engine bay...

Non doghouse oil coolers- air that goes thru them then goes over No 3 cylinder.... which is usually the one that gets hot first.....
Doghouse oil cooler, fan shroud & Fan, stops all that....

If that doesn't make any sense :):) I'll start again:):)

Also go for an svda dizzy, that will run it cooler.

57kombi - March 12th, 2005 at 05:29 PM

I am running a doghouse now, just thought it would make it cooler if I ran a type 4 cooler.

All exhausts run black now days. The exhaust will be black regardless of whether it's running lean or rich.

No regular or super petrol, so no more nice grey exhaust pipes.

put the motor in a Beetle I am sure it will run cooler.:thumb

A deep sump is also handy for keeping temps down as you end up with about 1.5 litres extra oil going round.
