probably cheaper to buy a 12 volt one and change the bush

running with a 12 flywheel?
I think you can replace the solenoid and pinion gear with 12V items, and keep the motor 6V with 12V running through it.
If its on a 6V flywheel you can put a 12V solenoid on it so it doesnt gang rape your ring gear.
and yea Id just buy a 12V one.

If You are going to keep the 6 volt 180mm flywheel,
just change the solenoid to 12 volts....
the starter motor will handle 12 volts OK...
I've seen them last for many years...
I suppose it depends on the condition of the teeth on the pinion & ring gear though...

6 volt starters should be fairly easy to come by, so You could always have a spare, just in case....

I've never heard of anyone having a 6 volt starter rewound to 12 volts....

Best of Luck

Yeah i know about changing the flywheel and all that , am trying to avoid that . Found out i can get it rewound / rebuilt and made into a 12v but may have to take mortgage out on house to pay for it!!!
As far as 12v solinoids go the starter i have has a WAY diffrent solinoid it would be like fitting 6v wheels to a 12v car ... dont fit!
thanx for all yo input
