I have bought a big motor for a project I am yet to find, I am looking for a Splitty Dual Cab..... Basically want to build a big motor, big brake, air conditioned, slammed split thats capable of big trips for surfing etc....

Given there a very few Split Dual Cabs around, and given Im basically building a hot rod.. Ive been toying with the idea putting a Split front cut onto a Bay Dual Cab...?.... Makes the engine, brake conversion much easier.....

Anyone heard of this done? Or done it?

No abuse about this please.... If you like your car standard, fine by me.........

mmm... dualcab with fibreglass toneaux cover with gaslifts. 2.4l Type 4 or EJ20 subi. Lowered on 17s.

I like your thinking. It would be my next project. Just got to convince the wife that it is practical!

PMGBUS and VWTYP2 did this a few years ago.
I think that a member in Sydney now owns it.

They did the whole front in steel by fitting a widened split front.

Not gonna do it myself...so much work...but would love to see it done....have major respect for those who put such efforts into their cars...don't care if its not my style/taste...but for the time and effort...wow.

So, I need to decide whether to wait for a Split D/C or jump into a potentially huge project of making one.....

But, given its not going to be very original at all......The time and cost involved is the deciding factor....

Thanks for that - Does look interesting, but I think if I were to go to the trouble of grafting a Split front cut then I would include the Split Windows....... Hhhmmmm, just found a link on Samba, waiting for a Split D/C could be the easiet option!

You know that in the uk you can get a whole front end that is made to fit on to a bay window that is a split screen... its fiberglass with renforcment but looks fairly close to an original split front end. I have seen a few over the years and they dont look to bad, the best one i ever saw was one of the brazilians models that has the splitty back end with one. u could hardly tell it was not a split from old.... bloody fantastic job they did.....

I really am pretty keen on the idea, just seems like I could get my engine into a bay with relative ease and get going with a lot less rust work etc....


Still wouldnt be a real split, but then again, why do i want a real one if the things i plan include 944 brakes, suspension, 911 engine, air conditioning, cruise control, walk through cabin, etc etc....

The company was called Baysplits.
Not sure if it is still going,
Have a look in some old Volksworlds from about 2-3 years ago.
I have seen one of their conversions and it looked really good.
I think the price was only about 220 pounds, or about $600 .
This included the whole front section and the split window area, it was just grafted onto the front of a bay, so you still have the strength of the original panel

yep, been there, done that.

Bay's do drive a whole lot nicer than Splits.
But it's the little idiosyncracies that give splitties they're appeal.
I don't see why you couldn't do the split windscreen graft into a bay too.
anything is possible.
then do an engine conversion on it too while you're at it.
my current ride has a 3.8 litre V6 in it.
I was towing my Oval up the freeway the other day at 130 kph behind it.
perfect tow car, and great on long trips.

thats awsome vwtyp2 , if you post more pics that would be good, i cant imagine doing that looks like some work there or was it a pretty straight forward swap, i guess if its a late bay the electricals would be in the same spot , and how did you fit the front bumper???? looks great i guess to the average non vw punter its one of those really old kombis

we also put a hatch in the back, by grafting in a kombi tailgate

the nose took about 2 weeks to do.
about 7 hours every weeknight, and about 20 hours on the weekend.
the rest of the car, including paint took from the week after new year's to the week before easter, putting in the same amount of time.
a lot of t&e was put into that car.

I believe it was well rubbed down.

Mmmm, just spotted a D/Cab in the for sales but at 15K for a car that isnt fully sorted.... Think I am still waiting..... Will keep a look out for the BaySplit kit on the UK websites... Cheers..........

Hi all, thanks for the advice regarding the baysplit thing, done some more research and decided to wait for a real split, if its worth doing, its worth doing properly... Found some ugly baysplits in my looking thought..!.. See attached images...

This project your toying with wouldnt by chance involve the 2.4L Porche engine you mentioned the other day!?

...I like the sound of it!!...dont know if id like to be sponsoring it but id love to watch it develop!

Did you see the link that was posted on AVD a couple of months ago about a blue split panel in Japan that got the hi-po treatment??

Ill have a look for it but if anyone knows where this is please re-post!!

Howdy.

Yep, its much easier to buy engines than cars...?... Anyway, its a 2.4 that came out of a 73 911, was rebuilt about 2 years ago and is in great mechanical condition, just doesnt look flash, so I need to spend some time cleaning and polishing it.....

My old man used to race a 73 911 in the old porsche cup, before all the GT3's and european cup cars came out and destoryed the series.... Anyway, it was a pretty standard 2.4 but gee it was quick... So, im thinking that it will move a bus adequetely....

Will document its progress and post photos.... When I find the right car..........
