Generator to Alternator for 1600cc....
shano - May 28th, 2005 at 07:19 PM

Is there an alternator available to fit the 1600cc? My generator seems to be sparking on the inside, which i dont think is a good thing........does the alternator fit into the existing bracket? I dont suppose anyone has one for sale?
I'll put a post in the parts section, but thought i would at least ask if it was possible to do first....
thanks

they are available but arent cheap at about $300 for the whole kit. it might be easier and cheaper to get new brushes put in the generator or get it rebuilt.

sparks is normal...

Sparking is normal for generators, as the commutator spins
charging thu the copper strips from the carbon brushes....
which wear down and need to be replaced....
The best part is... that the carbon brushes are very inexpensive to replace... so best to keep the old Generator that you know & trust.... & just replace the brushes or have a Generator overhaul at an auto electrician....
Obtain a quote first, as Alternator kits are around $320+ or if You are lucky enough.... to find a 1974-75-76 Beetle with an alternator in a car wrecking yard... a NONE VW wrecker is going to be cheaper than a Specialist VW wrecker who knows how rare these alternators are....

Ah, so your saying i shouldnt be too concerned yet? My mate noticed it today, and not knowing a great deal about them as such, thought this could be quite dangerous and/or serious. If sparking is a common thing with the gennies, is there a quick method to test or check the brushes still have a bit of life in them?
