Pan swap or add better bits???
Ian Bugden - July 10th, 2005 at 05:07 PM

Hi all,
I have a 1960 beetle that i wish to use on the streets and also take down the quarter and do a bit of circuit racing in. The question is should I upgrade to a later irs pan with factory front disc and do a rear disc brake conversion (I am of the view going fast is nice, stopping is better) or should I convert my 60 pan to IRS and do the front and rear disc brakes on it? What exactly is invloved in doing a pan swap?? I have seen the thread where a guy had to make a new rear body mount, is this the only mod needed?

With the brakes, I am wanting to run vented and sloted discs and hopefuly twin piston front calipers. I know this set up is available for the 4 lug vw front ends. Also of importance to me is the availability of new front rotors without having to replace the front hub assembly. What is the best way of doing the rear brakes? Porsche 914 or cb perfomance kits or do Sherman do a 4 lug rear set up?

Also What is the better front end?? Ball joint or k & L pins? Is it possible to put the 4 lug brakes onto a king pin front end?

Thanks in advance for your views, experience, opinions.

:spin:

Hi Ian

I reckon a 1500 auto pan is the way to go. King & link pin front ends have very limited camber adjustment. You can spend a lot brakes, how fast do you want to stop. Most people get away with stock rotors on the front with good pads, twin pin Type 3 calipers have bigger pistons than twin pin Beetle calipers so they give more bite, on the rear use the Ford rear discs. You can get both these slotted, to go vented is where you need to spend money.

Forget linkpins - do an IRS pan swap. Or get another car altogether - a Super perhaps. Do a search on 'big brakes' etc on here and you will find plenty of material

Hey felco, I said I wanted to race not want rust!!! :puke Kidding for all you s bug lovers out there.

I know where I can get a 1500 semi auto complete car, is there much in the pan swap??

I also noticed V Force do a rear disc brake using the 914 gear so I could look into that more closely.

Thanks all and keep any suggestions coming,

Ian.
