Kombi gearbox into type 3
Stanley - September 18th, 2005 at 08:22 PM

Will a mid 70's 3 piece Kombi g'box (IRS) fit straight into a '69 type 3 IRS ?
Have a potential problem with my notch g'box and have good a kombi g'box ready to go.
Engine has the extra rear engine hanger/support.

Thanks.

I might be wrong, but I think 002/091 boxes are slightly longer than standard type 1/3 boxes. However, I know people have used them before. Word of warning though. The ratios are totally different. For instance a 1600 kombi box (3 rib 002) has a ring and pinion of 5.12, the 1800 (5 rib 002) is a 4.86 and the 2L (6 rib 091) is 4.56 from memory. Where beetle type three diffs are probably 4.12 in general for that year IRS. The upshot is heaps more revs on the freeway. You are better off looking for an Lbug box. They are almost as strong as an 091 and have a 3.88 R/P. Great for highway. They also fit straight in and you can get them for as little as $150 bucks from a wrecker. All you need to do is redrill the indent for the shift coupling on the bottom of the shift rod rather than the top (ala beetle).

Thanks Pete...I knew the ratio's would be different but didn't know by how much. I thought about rebuilding the box while I was doing the engine but time will play a part. Might go with your suggestion of the L bug box.
Thanks again
