tdegens - September 21st, 2005 at 08:31 AM

Is it possible to put disc brakes into the front of a 61 beetle with the original link pins and original wide five wheel pattern?
Cheers Tom

Yes, kits are available from a number of places with varying degrees of quality and costs. A worthwhile upgrade however it may push the wheels out slightly (slightly wider track). I know Vintage VDS were working on a conversion that didn't change the wheel track, but not sure if this made mass production yet or not.

My friend has a set of front and rear wheel discs for sale in wide 5 for link pin/swing axle beetle - U2U me if you are interested.

Thanks Das, I only just posted today in http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=44002&page=1#pid410171

with the following....

"I have a complete set of disks for a king and link pin front end and swing axle rear. They are for a wide five setup (front and rear). They are a Volksconversions model and I am trying to get rid of them as I had to get another set to take a set of porsche rims. To see his site go to http://www.volksconversions.com.au/discbrakes.htm  I am willing to part with them for ~$1000 neg. They have done less than 400km and do just bolt on. The rear calipers will be new if you buy them. This is because I was able to use the rear calipers on my new disks, but to make a complete kit for sale I will by a new set of calipers.
Hope that all makes sense. You can U2U me if you want to clarify."

.... in another attempt to sell the disks.

tdegens, you can U2U me if you would like to discuss.

Ahh there you go - this is my friend with the discs :)

Alan, I know your gear is always top quality, so if no one buys them, I'm happy for you to lend them to me for free so I can get the 2110 in the ghia now.

Imagine the burnouts I could do with the cheese cutters on.

063bug,

Is this brake conversion for K&L (wide 5) offically up for sale? I am looking at upgrading my brake system on the 64 bug resto that I am doing. The price sounds reasonable, so I am just putting in my interest in the package.

Sorry to crash your thread tdegens.

tdengens,

The only thing that I have found while hunting around all the sites is that you have to be carefull with the upgrade and you current wheel size. I am currently running 13" wheels on the front and 14" on the rear. As the calliper sits out further than a standard drum it will either catch on the inside of the wheel or not allow you to fit the wheel at all. In my case I will have to go to larger wheels. From all the searching I am sure that the smallest possible wheels size is 15". Hope that give you a little insight.

Cheers.

Matt.

Matt,

You have U2U...... Price is negotiable by the way.

063bug,

Not good replying to your U2U in this thread, but my computer doesn't like U2U very much. Anyways I got your number and will drop you a line after work.

Just a couple of questions though:

1. Does the package include the complete setup ready to bolt on? e.g. all bearings, bolts, pads, etc. Or are there some things that I will need to purchase?

2. I understand that you have done very little work with these, however I am curious to know their condition, e.g. scoring etc.

3. You keep telling me you are negotiable, how negotiable is this as I don't want to make an offer that offends.

4. Where abouts are you? I more than likely will be able to pick these up.

Cheers,

Matt.
