happy easter to all,
i wondered if any one could tell me what year models signified a change in availability of horespower for beetles throughout its life. and how these
increases in grunt were achieved ie displacement increase or tuning and mods. starting from the splits would be fantastic.thanks rob.
heya
im probably too tired for this but i'll give it a shot so if get something wrong somebody point it out
the original split eninge was 985cc and in 41 or 42 went to 1131cc and made around 30hp. it wasnt long after they changed to ovalbackwindows in 53
that the engine upped to 36hp 1192cc by using bigger 77mm(?) pistons
it was some time in late 60 i think that they totoaly revamped the motor to make the 40hp 1200 and they fitted a 69mm crank insted of the 64mm to it
in 65-66 to make it a 1285cc which made around 44hp.
the 1493cc 1500 engine was the same just with bigger 83mm cylinders and was around 53hp and the twin port 1584cc engines started some time in 70
ithink and used 85.5mm jugs and mmade around the 60hp mark some countries got fuel injection in the mid 70s but i dont think this gave any extra power
adn from what ive heard its a pig odf a set up
thats as best as i can remeber it so the dates maybe abit off but thats the gist of it
hth
phew now i can go to sleep LOL
Joel
