Hi
my 82 model Transporter needs engine attention.Air cooled ,fuel injected.
First off can someone tell me the name given to this engine....is it Type 4 ?
I am after information regarding the rebuilding of this engine in relation to what is available as in oversize pistons etc, crank stroking, camshaft
availability etc and recommended places to have machining work carried out preferably by VW specialists.
Mechanic by trade in Taree Mid North Coast but I have limited VW knowledge
Any help appreciated
pobjoy - coffs harbour
also see what can be done with a type 4 here:

http://www.aircooledtechnology.com/
Big bucks when you start stroking cranks etc etc
Get Stan Pobjoy to do machining and advise on cam etc - then you can assemble yourself
1st - yes you have a Type 4.
Dont stroke - just go 103's or something
Give V Force (Roichard Holzl) a call.
He goes up to Lismore way a lot. Might be able to catch up and have a chat.
He does a lot of stock crank big piston bus motors
just go down and have a chat with the old man and see who he uses mate, but richard is quite good as well

Yes 103mm bore pistons. I have, however, heard comments that big bore pistons in a bus are prone to leakage due to thinner walls and are therefore
not recommended. Stock FI system won't have much scope for suping up.
Typical Type IV upgrades are similar to type I. Look at, replacing stock FI with Webers, high ratio rockers, extractors, head work.
wasnt someone selling an injection perfection setup with 48 ideas on here a while ago?
or was that on the rotary forum i watch...
might go well for him you think guiys?
