Would this work?....

Can the OG TIII (or late bug) bearing housing be removed from the axle tube and be replaced with an OG TI short axle bearing housing..... And if so, would the difference between them be sufficient to align the (modded TII) springplate with the OG TI bearing housing..... The idea being that no 'spacers' or adapters are need to bolt the housing to the spring plate....

What do you guys think?.... I haven't done any measurements yet..... Im thinking outside the excepted methods....

I knew it could be done, but I have no idea if the difference would be sufficient.... That would be the deciding factor.... If the difference is similar to the width of a splitty, then it sounds like it could be done..... If you have access to both a short axle tube and TIII tube (or late bug) that would be great if you could do some measuring.... I think the TIII bearing housing is around 35mm short of the splitty spring plate....

Is the locating pin set into a groove in the tube?... I have never actually looked very closely to that part of the car!!!!

There are three different bug axle lengths not including the reduction box deals.
66 and earlier, short axle/short spline
67, long axle/short spline
and 68, long axle/long spline....all type 3 swingaxles are also long axle/long spline

Oz had different cars as you know, but I have seen all of these here.... The 67, long axle/short spline is extremely rare as few EURO/US spec 67's came to Oz...
