Guys for a complete spastic in wiring anyone help me with instructions to wire up a retro fitted wiper to my type 3. I will be using a Charade wiper
motor and an original on dash 2 speed VW Type 3 switch. Do you need to run a relay in between or just a matter of powering up between switch and wiper
motor.
Thanks
How much current does the motor draw? A relay is usually the best idea if you're powering something that draws more than a few amps. What size fuse did it use in the Charade? That will clue you in if the amp/volts info isn't on the actual motor somewhere.
most modern cars run individually fused circuits and relays conrol most high current items - its also a way to keep the current in the dash switches
etc to a minimum.
In my oval there is no relay for the wiper motor.. (then again there is only 6 fuses for the whole car!). it is connected directly to the switch...
having said that you should check the current drawn by the motor and check the current rating of the switch... if the switch is not rated for the
current the motor will draw then wire in a relay to handle the current of the motor. most relays are rated a minimum of 10amps.
hth
VWs have used relays on their wipers for many years....
Maybe around the 60 model on...
but it is best to also use a relay...
that way the wiper switch will last forever as very little currrent will be going thru it...
