Removing engine from Auto gearbox?
ruckus - August 10th, 2006 at 01:57 PM

Should I be expecting any nastiness or extreme difficulties in removing the engine from Ren's '70 Auto notch?

I've been warned about the fluid from the transmission, but are there any other pitfalls?

if its like the semi auto, then what it told me in the beetle workshop manual, use the port holes in the housing where the torque convertor is to unbolt the torque convertor from the engine (flexiplate) (if its got one), and then feed the engine off after unplugging ATF hoses and usual jazz.

yet again, if its like a semi auto..., all u really got is the torque convertor and the ATF fluid to worry about. In regards to taking the torque convertor off, u can feed it off with the engine, but according to the manual, it says u have to replace a seal when u do that (tis y i was bashing my head into a brick wall at one stage). My torque convertor was bolted onto the engine and was taken off with it before i got the car, i put it all back together, fingers crossed the seal is still 'ok'. But yeah, thats all i can say, from a semi auto perspective though, not full blown.

As Baja says just undo the three bolts holding the torque convertor to flex plate through the holes in the bell housing.support gearbox and remove engine.

What ever you do-if you don't want oil from arsehole to breakfast time-after you remove the 3 bolts, prise the convertor away from the flex plate. The convertor has a spigot in the centre, which fits snugly into the drive plate, and it will come away with the engine when you separate them and you will have a mess to clean up.Just need to put a screwdriver between them and lever them apart(B4 you undo the 4 bellhousing bolts)-once done you will be able to spin the convertor easily.I made a small metal plate that fits under one of the 10mm nuts thats holds the front plate in the trans,to prevent the convertor slipping out when the whole trans is removed.
