Hi guys want some help
I put a 1600 in my bug with twin 40mm webers and 009 fairly stock motor.
The motor came with a standard distributor so I put my 009 in set it at TDC or so I thought when starting it I found that it was 180 out its running but has no guts takes ages to get up to 40/50 mph put in new plugs and leads and found #4 was not working put an old one in went a little better but still gut less, and backfiring but not bad only a couple of times
What should I do ?
Can someone detail timing plug gap point gaps and anything else I should do to set it to go better .

Hi Ron,
the 009 dizzy should be timed at Maximum advance which is around 30 degrees...
this has to be done with the engine revving to get the maximum advance with a strobe timing light...

Points gap is .016" or .4mm
plugs .025" or .64mm

Set the static timing to 7.5 degrees.Set it to about 29.5 for maximumm advance with a strobe light. Check for air leaks on the inlet and check the firing order....1,4,3,2. Some type of electronic ignition would be of benefit if you have gone to the trouble ($$$$) of fitting Webbers.Set and forget..Good luck.:beer

45mm is around 30 degrees on Your crankshaft pulley
measured straight across the front of the pulley from TDC to 30 degrees...
thats on an alloy degreed pulley but the VW pulley should be similar..
Most people set them at 28 - 32 degrees maximum Advance...

The engine will back fire etc if there is any leakage in the induction or Exhaust systems...
best to coat all gaskets with silastic..
ie exhaust and carburetor gaskets...

You will have to wait for the silastic to dry before running the engine...
