Welded v Forged Cranks
59BUG - May 4th, 2007 at 01:38 PM

Hi guys,

Im tossing up between buying a 69mm welded counterweight crank ( exchange from gene berg ) or buying a forged 69mm one from some one else.

Just wondering if anyone has used a welded gene berg crank before. Ive heard that the welded cranks can be just as good as forgies in lower power cars.

Nate

BTW the engine will be 69x85.5 or 69x90.5 havn't made up mind yet.

Hmm, good question.

Simple answer would be to get a VW factory one counterweighted here in Australia.
Saves the hassle with exchanges and shipping costs.

If you want one step better have it nitrided and ground to suit your case and bearings.

I used a nitrided & counterweighted VW crank in my supercharged 1775cc combo,
and it served me well with about 275hp and over 7500 rpm.

If you are staying with the standard stroke why not just go straight to 94's ?

As for the cranks, I have a Stan Pobjoy welded standard VW (which comes crack tested nitrided, counterweighted, balanced and ground for $770) and it revs all day to 8000rpm.
