hi there,
i have a 65 notchback and would like the flexability of a variable ride hight...as oposed to just super low. Does anyone have info on problems that need to be overcome to acheive this? An adress of a workshop that has maybe done it before? price estimate?

Or even an alternative...

easiest way is air assisted shocks... to go full air ride, you need to modify the front beam, and also the rear torsion bar setup, so it only runs on the bags, not the torsions.
check out http://www.kustomcoachwerks.com  for a few ideas on type 3 air bag setups. I havent seen any in OZ yet, but there may well be.

does anyone have any info on air shocks? if installed and pumped up is the weight of the car completly on the shock or does the torsion bar still support a little?

I had a look at KCW and all the info is overwhelming, too many acronyms aswell, but thanks for the info... anyone in Auz doing air bag work?

If you set the car to a low height on the torsions without the air shock, the car will be riding mostly on the airshock if raised beyond that height. The torsion will only work when it begins to twist again. Go too high, and the torsion the bag will be fighting the torsion.

they do air kits, using air shocks in the front, and bags in the rear.
You could have a look at their kit, and get all the stuff locally and do your own, or get a shop to if you cant do it yourself. I dont know of anyone local doing their own kits.

http://www.airkewld.com  have a kit that use air sleeves and no torsion bars. costs like 2200aud at the moment plus postage. there is no welding to do the front, but there are mods to be done for the rear.

the "tuck shop" at Seven Hills in Sydney does VWs and minitrucks. be worth talking to him, he's got all sorts of stuff in the window and the individual components don't look that exy.

You could also try talking to the guys over at The DDB. They cater for the Type3 and make a "bolt in" air ride sysyem. Pity they are in the states but they are more than willing to ship.

I just found myself a '62 and I've been looking at the "bolt on" air bag setup from airkewld as well amongst a bunch of other things, but I was wondering if it will pass inspection in queensland

I looked into it ages ago. Its pretty hard to get it legalised in Queensland. You need to like run a computer controlled self leveling system, similar to the buses and I dont believe its cheap. Try some of the hot rod shops like Ozzie Rods at Slacks Creek or the Airbag Man.

The problem is all the sports truck drivers ruined it by "railing" down the M1 were they were caught on video by the Cameras and they changed the laws Businesses like Burning Customs ruined it for themselves and others.

thanks for all the posts. ive been in touch with tuck shop and others and they've been very helpful...but, like vwkids post, any info from people with bugs or type3's who have bags on their car would be appreciated.

itll be next to imposible to know who to get to do the job or what kit to buy otherwise. ive found people who love and hate each air ride/bag option but most are not speaking from experiance let alone from a vw stand point.

so if you know of anyone...or a project article/doc...post me
