1800 to type 1 gearbox?
outsider - June 22nd, 2008 at 09:32 AM

hi all..

just a few quick newbie questions..

i have access to a reasonably cheap 1800 combi (type 4?)engine and id like to know if its an easy installation on my "AO" coded (Karmen Ghia case) type 1 gearbox, gearbox is in reasonable condition for age but the websites i have visited conflict with what engine capacity this box was designed for..some say 1300, some say 1600, will it be strong enough for the extra weight and the increased power of the 1800?

the vehicle that this combo will be mounted in is a dedicated off road recreational (non race) buggy being built on a '68 type 1 pan, will i need to make provision for another engine mount on the engine cage?

cheers, Shayne.

You will need a bush to go into the flywheel of the type4 to match up to the input shaft of the transmission.

Try Sharpbuilt.com.au as they sell them

thanks for the advice and links 11CAB, 1800 is off the cards now, i went and had a look and it was not too good..crankcase full of water and even with the plugs removed you could not turn it by hand..

back to looking for a reasonable, cheap 1600...and a few other things i need...
