help needed with carby issues (sorted dud carby)
Pauld - November 3rd, 2008 at 11:05 AM

hi everyone thought i would have a tinker with my beetle on the weekend and have a look at the carby on my bug, it had one of the brazilian solex carbs on it when i bought it and its got wires and vacuum lines all over it so we swapped it for a 34pict3 we had in the shed the carby has been rebuilt but now my beetle refuses to build up rpm without flooding with fuel, idles fine but dies if you accelerate the tiniest bit, at first we thought maybe my engine was a 1500 because it had a smaller intake manifold but iv checked the engine number and it is a 1600, has anything like this happened to anyone else? is it possible that the fuel issue has brought to light a different underlying problem with my motor at all?

any tips on where to head next would be pretty helpfull
thanks Paul

Where are u? Is the choke set correctly?

im in darwin, we left the the choke wide open when testing it, it was 36degrees in the shed yesterday so that shouldnt have made much of a difference

Paul,
Read up here : http://www.vw-resource.com/34pict3.html  . Your 34 Pict could do with Carb cleaner/blow out if it has been sitting around for a while and they are sensitive sods. Might pay to check the adjuster screw O-rings as well.

well diagnosed we swapped to another carby which was running on another beetle and its running fine, so il either start to tear down the one i have or invest in another to keep the car driving for the time being as i have to put thee carb back on the car i borrowed it from

Hi mate, it sounds like an accelerator pump diaphram problem or the spray nozzle from that circuit is missing?, even if you have a large main jet in that carb it should still free rev reasonably well.If the diaphram adjustment is way out of whack it will cause a massive flat spot and wont rev.Check those parts first and see how u go!!!
