1800 carbs on 1600
Carter - May 25th, 2009 at 08:38 AM

Hey all,

Is it possible to fit dual solexes of a later 1800 bus onto my 72 bus running a stockish 1600? It's probably more trouble than it's worth but i thought there is a possibility so i'd ask :)

thanks

As long as the Solexes will fit onto the manifolds there should be no problem.

better off fitting twin solexs of a 1600 type 3

type4 twin solexs are fairly different, you could fit them to some type3 manifolds (type4 is way different) and if there the later ones with that central idle circuit bullshit it would take some work fitting all the hoses for it

The carbs are actually quite similar in the body and appearence, and will bolt stright on.
The big differences are in the throat, 24mm type 3 and 26mm type 4. This also meant the jetting (main, idle and air correction) is different.
The next issue is the air cleaner if you run a stock setup. The kombi air cleaner clips on, the type three has the centre bolt to hold it all down.

I'd say find type 3 carbs unless you want to play around with your jetting.
The central idle is easily isolated if you don't want to use it, and on a type three there's no room for the additional piping.
Incidently most parts can be mixed and match between them also.

There were a lot of minor changes depending on how late the kombi carbs are, accel pump, and a lot of extra gizmo's for cold starting.
