Hey guys & gals. I'm new here, to this forum and brisbane, and i'm looking for someone that can help me with my new toy. I brought a Super
sports Mk3 and it has a semi worked twin port 1600cc. What i need
to know is Valve clearances. Also who is in the area that can help me with engine parts ie Gaskets, Tube o rings, ETC.
I have found from this site so great tips. Thanks. May see some of
you guys on the weekend at the gold coast...
Rollmeova,
If the car has the stock aluminium pushrods - .006" (6 thousandths of an inch) is the clearance. If you have chrome moly pushrods -
loose zero is recommended.
Since you'll have the rocker covers off anyway you should be able to pick what the pushrod is made out of.

Sorry guys. I meant the Rockers clearances.
My first VW mechanic who was factory trained told me that it is best to adjust the valves to 6 thou on the inlets and to 8 thou on the exhausts.
That means that the engine will sound a bit tappety, but because of the extra clearance on the exhaust valves they will never burn out, no matter how
hot the engine gets.
What happens is that with differential expansion of the metals in the engine, when it is too/very hot the valve clearances can close up to almost
zero.
On an inlet valve that doesn't matter much, but on an exhaust valve, it really matters a lot and they will burn out very quickly.
Also it is not recommended to run a Beetle engine for long periods in very hot conditions. When the temperature is around 45 degrees, go easy on the
engine and give it and yourself a siesta until it has cooled off a bit.
Cool. i've being told to do them stone cold and not hot.... Any help
