pod - July 14th, 2009 at 06:21 PM

i`m putting an alternator on my semi auto, can you use the original fan backing plate part off the 12v genny or do i have to use the cheap tinny looking thing that came with it???

i'd advise it too, those aftermarket ones are cut from al foil by blind taiwanese children with scisssors

use the origional

but make sure you fit it in the correct position so the cooling vent works for the bearings

Hi

Your 12 volt generator stuff should work, some Kombi generators had different tin. Do a check when its together for belt alignment.

Dave ,have put it on the way it came off genny, and Steve will do once back together ,don't want to wear belts prematurely or have them throw off

Paul,
Absolutely re-use the gennie twinware & hardware (fan hub, woodruff keys, spacers etc). It is far better quality. The slot faces down, just in case you need to re-orient it. A few things to watch?
Make sure the Alt doesn't hang up on the alt stand. It is the alt lower two ribs that may do it. Judicious angle grind fix.
Running an alt fuel pump? Make sure your pump rod is 100mm. I got supplied a 108mm (Gennie) pump rod with my alt pump.
Carb accelerator pump linkage may interfere. Definitely will on a 1600DP with a Gennie 34 Pict 3. Brutalise/bend or Grind the alt body.

Here's a cheap read :

well its all in and working with no dramas of grinding etc.Petrol pump to alt clearance of about 1 - 2mm ,carby had no probs plenty of room (maybe cause its a single port ?????) ..And the belt alignment was perfect ,so one happy chappy:tu:next to do the same with my 1600tp out of my baja as part of doing a ring change and stud replacement:(

its only the early pict-3 carbs with the adjustble pump stroke towards the back of the car that have clearance issues
but that is easily gotten around
