wheels on a super bug
funbug - October 19th, 2009 at 09:55 PM

Tried fitting 16 inch wheels with ET 50mm on my 75 super bug but they seem to rub on the inside at the rear. Do you guys have any ideas on how to fix this? Would fitting discs at the rear help or should I get other wheels with a different ET?

how wide are they?

Sorry! Forgot to mention they are 16 x 7 with 205/55 x 16 tyres

Mine fit fine and they are 17x7 but a 55 ET. That being said i have put a 944 rear end in which widens track by 50mm a side. If this isn't an option you could always go with spacers

what stud pattern?

Hi

Correction to Davids post, the 944 brakes add about 25mm per side, so numerically you need to find about 20 mm.

Try using some washers to space the wheel so that you can get a better idea, sometimes wheels hit the spring plate bolt if the nut and washer are facing out, these can be reversed to gain a little bit.

The first 2 places they would rub would be
1) the bump stop
2) the 3rd bolt on the spring plates

These are both easy fixes
1) Cut 1/2" of the bump stop plate thing
2) turn the offending bolt around, They are installed with the nut on the outside. Change it so as the nut is on the inside and the head is outside. You can grind some off the head as well so as you can just get a socket on there

Sort of surprised you are having trouble
I run 16" x 7" ET 40 with 225 50 series and have plenty of room
Well i thought i did
I havent had to cut my bump stops or anything

I did run Design 90 16" x 7" - dunno the ET and i had to cut the bumpstops on those

Thanks guys. The wheels are off a late model VW with a 5 X 112 bolt pattern. I'll trim the bump stop and reverse the offending bolt to gain more clearance. Otherwise, I may have to think about other wheels.

Are spacers legal in Queensland?

Nope

I have ET 40 7x16 with 225 55's on the rear (boxster) and I had to grind off some off the bump stop roof, not too much just enough to clear and theres still plenty of meat for the bimp stop to land on. I also had to flip the springplate bolt. I also lathed off some of the head of the bolt for a bit more clearance. Every car's a little different when it comes down to tyre clearance it seems.
