Lots of people make rear shelves for their Beetles to house rear speakers.

I could sit down and work it out with some cardboard.

Is there an template anywhere I can copy from to save all the trial and error? (I have searched.)

Just think about how it is attached.
I have seen plenty of these made out of real heavy solid timber board.
Just sitting there.

It wont pass rego without been attached somehow, mine got knocked back because when the seat is folded down it can move forward like 30mm.

Rego is not an issue in Victoria, since we have no annual inspections and the shelf will go in after registration formalities are completed.

But, I had a poorly anchored parcel shelf come forward on me in a Gemini years ago, so yes I will be ensuring this one is securely mounted.

I made a sub box that bolted to the rear area floor in David's car, I'm going to take this out and build a similar thing, but just run 2 6x9s.

To fit the 12 inch sub in I had to make the box really low compared to the seat back, so the new box will be higher but still bolt to the floor.

i dont even use a shelf i have 2 speakers in there,and there is still room for a bag or whatever.
i personally dont like the shelfs,but if you want heaps of beats they do help.

Ideally what I want to have is a heavy duty outer edge where the speakers mount, and a lightweight inner section on a removable hinge or similar so I can open or remove it to access luggage underneath. Similar to a lot of modern hatchbacks.

A few quick drawings in paintbrush of what I want to achieve. Top pic represents 6.5" speakers, bottom pic 6x9's, but you get the idea.

Iv been thinking about what im going to do for my 64 since i want good tunes but stock look.

Ive decided im gunna make a reall low profile box bout 100mm high and put the speakers as low as possible and make a false floor over it with speaker mesh over the speakers to protect em and to hide em so stuff can still go behind the back seat but still have tunes. And get a low profile sub and amp out of like a ute or somethin

I just went and took some pictures of how things are set up in the back of my 1500 Beetle.


I made the rear shelf myself and it has two 6x9 speakers.





I made it with a lift out lid so I could still use the space behind the backseat for storage.








The mounts for the lid are also the mounts for the shelf. I used aluminum angle. I cut two little pieces for the back and had one long piece that runs across the front. The two at the back had to be bent slightly more. Then I just drilled into the body and pop riveted them in place.








As stated above I used a long piece of angle for the front mount. It is riveted to either side of the body. Then there a screws up into the underside of the shelf.

The backseat still hits back against the standard stops, but the shelf is a very close fit so it all looks quite good.

It's certainly given me some food for thought. Its roughly similar to what I planned, except mine will sit lower in the car to allow room for the two baby seat bolts I need to fit.

The baby bolts will go as high on the rear firewall as possible, without going into the angled bit behind the vents. I may put a couple of angled brackets just below them and suspend the shelf from there.

I bought some Kenwood 6x9 4-ways online today.

have a look behind the backseat you may actually find theres a factory parcel shelf there already, just hanging down the back of the seat

i was quite surprised when i found both my white Lbug and the yellow 1300 had them, i thought it was just the backboard panel part of the backseat
they hinge from the top of the backseat
but my glovebox manual says they're optional though

very light duty though, just 4mm masonite.
the Lbug just had some cruddy 80s 4" speakers cut into it
anything bigger it wouldnt have supported

This maybe and old post but i am currently looking at eventually building one myself... here is an un-measured designed i am looking at building, not sure on the mounting points as of yet but something along these lines.
