to convert or not....
rickp - May 5th, 2010 at 02:53 PM

OK so i just bought a 71 Karmann ghia and it is LHD,
now at this early stage of the project i would like to make up my mind weather to keep it LHD or convert it to RHD.... i know there is a little mucking about with the conversion, But the question is... does would i regret not converting it to RHD later on.

now i am led to beleive that this is a pretty straight foward conversion... considering that i will be installing a narrowed beam and drop spindles to get the car closer to the road.

i understand that the pedal box is the same, the steereing column will also be the same, steering box can be reused,

fuel tank will have to be replaced as well as the wireing loom.. (going to do this anyways because the current one looks more like a birds nest and i would like to have a current updated fuse box, relays ect..

im pretty sure i can source a RHS dash...

but rightnow im still in two minds over doing it or not...

anyways guys convince me!

Leave it as is and just get it on the road and drive it.

mmmm.....is it a daily driver???

If so i would change

Sunday cruiser - nah

But you sure the pedal box is the same?? or the steering box can be reused???

getting a good dash will be the hard bit

one issue is if you want to sell at a later stage the American market is probably where the $$$$ are

I say don't do it. Driving on the wrong side of the car is not that bad unless you use a tollbooth or secured parking lot every day.

Personally I'd prefer an original LHD car over a RHD converted one any day.

Cheers,
Brett.
