Hi guys, my first post on this site. I have purchased a 1971 beetle for my daughters 1st car. She insisted!
Well after some time trying to tune the car to not have flat spot on acceleration with no luck, I decided to dig deeper. Well one thing led to
another, now I am completing a full rebuild from 1300 to 1600. This is a twin port engine and I would like to get the jetting right for the larger
capacity. The carb is a 31pict. What jet sizes should I be looking at, and where can I get them?. Any help would be appreciated.
Most of the information you want is here
http://www.vw-resource.com/
Most VW shops will have the jets you want, as would Carb Service Company on Parramatta Road Burwood NSW
Tell us where you are so as we can help

Thanks bizarre. I am down near Ballarat Vic. so anything I need will need to be ordered and sent by post. I guess I should see what size jets are in
the carb now before ordering any more.
Another question, do any of you run the thermostat, mine is missing and it's cold down here in winter. I am assuming this would help the bug heat up
better in the mornings.
Dont assume the size is correct
Some one in 40years may have reamed them
Yes, I run a thermostat and I am in Melbourne, not Ballarat! I bought a replacement years ago from Vintage Veedub (they do mail order) however have no
idea whether they still stock them. You will also need the flaps in the fan housing to connect the thermostat to.
Being in Ballarat I also recommend you ensure the heat risers on the exhaust are not blocked otherwise you will definitely experience carby icing when
started up first thing in the morning. Good luck with the Beetle. You will learn heaps. The "Idiot" manual (How to KeepYour Volkswagen Alive by John
Muir) is a must read for newby's in my opinion.
Thanks for that info. The flaps in the fan housing are intact, and the heat risers ok. What I am missing is the tinware that goes under the cylinders
between the push rod guides. And I need to understand what the thermostat connects to. Will go shopping online and see if I can find a thermostat.
Thanks.
You may be able to find the bellows but good luck in finding the push rod and holding bracket
This is what you need
It just bolts to the block underneath
just a thought... would it be a bit better to just put a 34 pict in?
ps hurrah to the heat riser... I learned it the hard way
I don't understand. What is the difference with the 34pict that would help the cooling?
it's just little bigger and that you can get them new is all
and most 1600 comes with them
if you rebuild it as a 1600 just leave the 31pict on it
31s work well on 1600s, theres almost no difference power wise and 31s are alot more user freindly than 34s
and yeah you need heat risers regardless of what climate your in.
Thanks guys. I'LL give the 31 a good look over again, and I have recently put a kit through it, so should be ok.
