alternative heater source??
shane91 - June 27th, 2010 at 08:40 PM

has anyone ever had success fitting an electric heater with a fan or something to any type of vw??

tapping into hot coolant or screwing with an exhaust just seems like to much of an f' around and was wondering if it is possible to have even if its only a de-mister on the front window, an electric heater set up in some pipework, with a fan set up to blow the hot air out?

just a thought

dont bother as the current required to generate a decent amount of heat and power a fan from 12v is more than the car can generate.
ive fitted boaster fans to the existing system that makes it quite decent but then again mine is a modified kombi motor in a bug, also im fairly sure that im the only one in the southern hemisphere that has a working heater on the conversion

damn ok then, was worth asking about

that would make adding a heater so much easier..

just looking into options if i buy this 74 kombi im looking at, 18L subaru engine in it

Once you have a water cooling system its a piece of piss to plumb in heatercore with a fan on it.
Im in the process of it at the moment and you can take the easy option and by an aftermarket setup or just make up a home made one like Ive got.

They are amazingly effective with subarus thermostat setup

i've read your thread on the ej22 conversion for your beetle, good job with that btw, very impressed

and ok then, i've only seen the kombi once and it was very quick, but from what im told i used to run, but now has no fuel, and two dead batteries. When it did run it had some overheating issues, since he mounted the radiator in the back..... as in against the rear most panel of the engine bay ( not to knowledgeable about kombis).

so a new radiator position is probably in the works so i might aswell set up a heater while im at it, i dont mind if i only get a de-mister, as long as i can keep seeing the road through my windscreen i'l be happy, and while i drive my commonwh*re (yes i own one but i very much dislike them), if ever im cold the de-mister goes on, front part of car warms up and then heater goes off for rest of trip, anything else would be alot of hassle to never get used..

looking forward to seeing another nice detailed and informative thread from you joel (hint hint)

also i've been looking at kombi pics around the same year as the one im interested in, and i've notice none of them have vents in the side of the car at the rear? as in level with the engine bay, i'l grab a pic and post the link to it but it seems to look like something that isnt stock
