Old dogs and turbo tricks
snowman9 - October 4th, 2010 at 09:41 PM

Hi Everyone,

So, it's been three months since I converted my 50,000 km old, hand-built, NA type 1 AS41, German fuel injected cased engine, running stock crank & rods
into a blow through turbo set-up.

The mettle runs @ 7.8/1 static comp., blowing through two
modified (but not that much), 36 DRLA Dellortos.
Modified 050 heads with stock valves, running heavy single springs.
Stock crank n rods actuating a Brazilian AP3 cam.

Turbo is a Garrett GT-17, sourced from a 2002, 95 Saab
with a welded exhaust housing, permitting a synapse style, external wastegate.
Boost is presently @8psi.

I have not been too nice to it of late, and have received zero terminal warning --@8psi-- of immanent hand grenade.

I am happy to post this build and the *methodology* employed -- with pics -- if there is any interest.

Cheers.

Yes, we are always interested in modifications and especially turbos. I bought a pair of 40mm Dellortos about 2 years ago at a good price just in case I went blow through setup one day

Look forward to the photos and seeing your setup.

Snowman,

What is the AP3 cam like?

I am pondering runing one with 1.4 lifters.... (initially N/A then maybe later a lower).

Scuise my ignorance, but what is meant by valve lash? .013 - .015". Is this refering to clearance?

Why would they have such a large clearance?
