Remote locking and pre 67 beetles
Wired1 - August 21st, 2011 at 04:09 PM

I've just fitted power locks to my 1974 1500 beetle this weekend and it was pretty straight forward. I also used one of the spare actuators to replace cable opener thing in the glove box and it works very well too.

Now I want to do it to my 1963 beetle and it looks like it will be a mission. The later beetles have a handy locking button to connect the actuator to but the early ones have the dual-purpose opening handle come locking handle. Has anyone here fitted openers to an earlier beetle or, if not, has anyone got any ideas how to do it?

I looked into it, forget it.

Also, you cant actually lock the drivers door of an early beetle (mine 61). As you would know, all the key does in the outside door handle is turns a small contact pad that strikes the release button away out of the way.

Just a thought, but I would leave the glove box cable intact (or a shorter one tucked away somehwhere out of the way) if your power lock solenoid shits itself or battery goes out then no boot opening for you.

Yes that's a good idea Brendan, I have already had to cut the bonnet handle off once when I was setting it up. I think I'll put a short cable to under the right fender just as a back up.
I might look at just opening the driver's door with one actuator. I'll post pictures if it works :)
