Performance, Suspension upgrade and hydraulic clutch!
Andy - September 28th, 2011 at 01:32 AM

Thought I'd post some pics of a suspension upgrade, full indepandant, with trailing arms, coils and shocks. Was an easy job, all bolt in. Trying to breath a little life into the fast back.

With some tuning should get a great ride and hold the road better than ever!!

Thought I'd look at an engine upgrade at the same time, trying to find a way to get better support on the engine, so will be going with a solid support at the rear to hold everything in place.

Suggest getting an early Type 3 Swing Axle rear suspension and converiting it to IRS this way you will have forks and a cradle to mount the gearbox to the same as a Beetle. I know Type 4 Kombi motors hang in the back but the body is much stonger than a type 3.

Late Type 3's like in your pics even had trouble keeping their stadard motors in the engine bay with their hangers let alone a type 4 motors like in your pics not to mention the added weight and and the added horesepower.

Cheers,

David

Yep, it's cretainly a weak point. This has a strengthened rear member and support up into the body. The type 4 motor should be a nice fit though.
Late Bay's also had an additional support above the gear box to another chassis member.

Another shot of suspension.

Decided on a different tackt for the solid engine mount

Andy - October 4th, 2011 at 07:12 PM

Wrong question to ask mate, local suppliers won't service me, I'm sure over seas ones will :(
Another all nighter coming up, that will be three in a row. I really need to quit the day job, it stuffs around time to build VW's.
Oh, AVD members musn't like my posts, I thought at least some one would have asked what the hell this build is by now???

MickH - October 4th, 2011 at 07:33 PM

If you sent the plate here i could have posted a 'new" one back the same day...cant believe they couldn't do that in Brisneyland.....overseas it is then......I'll be half quittinng my night job so i can get more done here. ?Your car looks a lot nicer under it's arse end now, all that pretty white paint!!! Keep up the good work, get it back together before your life is painful, real painful.....:grind:

Andy - October 5th, 2011 at 04:24 PM

Well, have two now... Maybe I got pointed to the wrong people then. All back in one piece, all running a treat!
Gee, I have a nice arse! Never knew you cared. Yes very lucky I got it running late last night, am in Melb now for a week.

MickH - October 5th, 2011 at 06:07 PM

vlad01 - October 10th, 2011 at 08:55 AM

A bus i guess? I heart the rear suspension in this thing.

MickH - October 10th, 2011 at 11:05 AM

It's his "Fastback"....

Andy - October 10th, 2011 at 07:38 PM

Come on, surely some one can guess what this is?
Let's narrow it down, VW, air cooled........
What's the suspension?? Factory VW, so is hydraulic clutch.

MickH - October 11th, 2011 at 11:44 AM

Me thinks they need more clues......like it has a sister in bad shape...and 1968....

mackaymanx - October 11th, 2011 at 04:03 PM

They're a little slow around here.

kombikim - October 11th, 2011 at 09:34 PM

Brasilia ?

matberry - October 11th, 2011 at 09:48 PM

Hi Andy, type 4 suspension in your type 3 is my guess but more pics would help.

Looks good though

Andy - October 11th, 2011 at 10:58 PM

WooHoo, Matt, you may be onto something there!!

Andy - October 11th, 2011 at 10:59 PM

I will reveal more soon :)

Andy - October 13th, 2011 at 03:31 AM

No one else wants to guess??

kombikim - October 13th, 2011 at 09:28 PM

um, kombi motor in Mazda bongo van with type 4 suspension?

Andy - October 14th, 2011 at 01:42 AM

Now there's a plan!! That would be a lot of fun at Warwick...

Still no one keen to comment further? I must admit some of my posts are a little misleading.
It is all factory VW, and pretty much original, boot up the front, has been to many QLD shows where it's also left out in the cold unnoticed.

MickH - October 14th, 2011 at 09:18 AM

Ugly duckling that it is...
