It's a chop

Cabriolets were built by Karmann and have a different chassis number.

You can tell if a bug is a chop just buy looking at it.

All choptops looks like a bug with a badly cut off roof and an ugly rollbar to stop them folding in half and an canvas top that looks like a BBQ cover with bows holding it up like a circus tent.

Genuine Karmann Cabriolets looks alot more classy.
Proper framed windows front and rear, a roof that keeps that classic beetle shape and no ugly roll bar.


You can pretty much count the number of genuine cabs in Aus with both hands.
If it's a genuine cab you'll know it.

Its a genuine cabrio just not a cabrio pan. The pan has been replaced with a beetle pan but it is the same as the strenghtening is in the body not the floor pan. all you had to do was ask.

Make sure the chassis plate under the bonnet has Typ 152 on it. 152 is cabrio RHD, whilst Typ 151 is LHD and probably means its been converted.

The pan, other than the VIN, is the same for sedan and cabrio. All of the cabrio stuff is built in to the body of the car.

I can't speak for early flat windscreen models but the strengthening certainly does go into the floorpan on mine, two bloody great bars front to back underneath. vwo6o on here has an earlier one so he'd certainly know

The pan is the same as a beetle as mentioned above, the square section renforsement is attached to the heater channels.
