kombi key question
volk hogan - August 13th, 2012 at 06:58 PM

howdy, ive recently just picked myself up a bay window panelvan (my first kombi) from a wrecking yard..
the car came with no keys..
it's either a 71 or a 75.
i'm hoping to get a key cut for the ignition as i'm hot wiring it at the mo. it has no steering lock.
i've removed the barrel from the sliding door lock, will the code on this lock give a locksmith the info to cut me an ignition key? assuming its the original lock..
did the door and tail gate keys originaly match the ignition????
thanks......

Good question, two of my last buses had different key to ing, but my current bus has all the same. Usually if the doors have been changed over the years they could be different locks

Just pop the ignition barrel out and the code will be on that if its not a repro one.
As mentioned the door handles get broken and swapped or different panels fitted so often the code is meaningless.

New barrels with keys are available and pretty cheap too.

im hopping there the same cos the ignition barrel is a lot harder to reove then the sliding door lock, the door looks to be the original..

The doors may be but the handles often get broken and replaced and its pretty easy to put the old barrel in the new handle so the old key still works but the code no longer matches.

it's not that tricky to get the ignition barrel out.
Check the stickys in the FAQ forum, its the same process as a Beetle.

Won't hurt getting a key cut, at least You will have a spare for the door.. lpl

I believe one key did all... originally...
