Regular readers will know I have taken a leaf from our mate "Joel" ...'blowing the bug' thread and supercharged Tweety's EA81 engine. A breif
run down on that-
Used a sC12 draw through at 5 psi Dellorto 40DHLA carb, cut in half and then shortened a manifold from a Datsun Lynx unit, fabricated the rest. Those
interested can read the thread Supercharged eA81 in trike.
A few things- firstly my conversion from 1916cc to Ea81 had one flaw- I had a type 3 auto that dyno figures revealed it zapped 14 hp off the engine. I
posted the readouts on that thread but basically NA was 74hp at the fly and 59 at the RW. SC12 was 82 at the fly and 100 ATW. But the economy was
terrible...too bad for my happiness. 18-19mpg not towing our van. Hence my desire for efficiency in all meanings.
In Australia Subaru did not bring out their eA series engines with fuel injection. In the states they were everywhere in the similar EA82 espeically
in California where it was favoured as that state had anti pollution laws that led the world.
The Ea series had a single point fuel injection set up not dissimilar to a Hitachi system here around 1990 in some Nissan utilities. The latter had
two injectors, the subie just one.
The Ea82 SPFI has a similar manifold (but not the same) to the EA81 and will fit the EA81 engine. It has a different dizzy that can be modified by
raising the gear up the shaft and using a turbo mount. A few other mods like rotating the idle sensor so it doesnt hit the dizzy, linkages,
installing the loom, ECU, gringing off 3mm from the top of the block halves, and high pressure fuel pump, a return line to the tank and O2 sensor is
pretty straight forward stuff.
It all seems a maize at first but after you get on the net and google EA81 SPFI conversion you will see a few guys have write ups on the whole
proceedure. Thanks to them.
Currently I've installed everything except the loom. For vw owners the SPFI throttle body is fairly compact. I imagine it would suit a beetle owner
well.
The only mod that should be done to the engine is raising the CR from 8.7:1 to 9.5:1, something I'll do next year with my spare engine when it is
fully recoed. I'm hoping for far better economy. The EA82 SPFI engine made 90hp. Close would be good.
To purchase the kit is not easy. I was lucky in that a guy imported one and lost interest.
Think the old camira had a single point injector? .........Though it was a nissan motor i think, always thought that it might make a good base for a simple fuel injection set for a beetle motor
yeh Nils, the camira SPFI is possible to fit to some engines. Easier to do it this way though- with the EA82 manifold. But the option is there.
Gday Tony, been keeping an eye on your thread, it's coming along nicely.
Many many moons ago I looked at fuel injecting my 1776 engine by either megasquirt or adapting some mainstream car system.
The AC Delco setup from all the Opel based cars (Camiras, Daewoos and N13 Pulsars/Astras) lends itself well to conversions and is extremely adaptive
both in single point and multi point
I'll be interested to see how happy you are with it once it's up and running, the only reason I didn't finish mine was I worked out for almost the
same cost I could fit the entire subi engine which was bigger and more modern and already had EFI.
you can use early 3.9L EA falcoon twin barrel TB with SPFI.
Should find heaps of those at the tip.

Brilliant conversion that is a lighter powerplant and won't destroy your gearbox, touque in low revs great for offroad use. gaskets , rings ,
bearings and most parts still available cheap as old stock still on the internet. Many parts common to standard EA81.

Notice blue 'Subaru" oil filter fitted in factory in Japan , this engine never made it to its first service. test Report from Importer for
compressions . blowby , oil pressure ect.

to bring turbo compressor to the rear allowing short exaust out of any rear mount conversion , neat and tidy compact conversion.

The SPFI system has been running a while now. Have had soem issues. Not having ever dealt with fuel injection- its a steep learning curve.
The Subaru sPFI ssytem is hailed by many as a simple early system that gets the job done- the job of monitoring fuel/air ratio based on sensors and a
single throttle body and sole injector.
The sole symptom is low top end speed and power. The 3 speed VW auto is operating fine. In the first two gears the engine revs out nicley then in 3rd
it wouldnt go over 100kph.
The injector was cleaned by a pro and he told me he "suspects a poorly operating MAF. The mass air flow sensor has a primitive but effective enough
hot wore system, located in a small hole of a venturi between the air filter and the TB. as air passes thru it a measurement is taken of the air
capacity and the computer sends out a message to the inejctor to release the fuel amount. A faulty MAF will tell the computer to release less fuel
than desired. Being only released in the USA I had to seek out a new MAF. The first one was without the housing- of course the housing was different.
Now I bought another with the housing ( http://www.rockauto.com you should do
yourself a favour and search for parts here for anything...it will consume days of your life!).
The throttle position sensor is another unit that was under suspicion. This unit has zero resistance at idle and slightly above idle. then varies in
resistance to wide open throttle WOT wher eit is suppose to be 2400 ohms (according to the manual). However mine was 5000 ohms. It has adjustment on
the TB and so it was and I gained 10kph top speed. Sound little significant but all these things add up to a smoother engine and solving issues to do
with a 30 year old system and hell knows how long it has been since it was operating in a car.
Getting a SPFI kit isnt easy in itself. Luckily I got mine in Melbourne form a guy that lost interest. The kit coems with different and modified
dizzy, loom, ECU and fuel pump etc. A few resistors are provided to cap off some loom ends where solonoids or sensors are not required like the EGR
for Califormia anti pollution laws.
So even though I knew nothing of the system I've picked up many details that will get me through also with the help of Ausubaru and USMB Subaru
forums.
It wont have the power of the supercharged engine but it will have the economy and efficiency.
First start up.
The MAF ordered.
By the way guys, a friend of mine from taralgon Vic owns a VW trike. He got his injection system installed by this mob and is very happy with it.
