gear boxes don't break, people break them, so iff you don't going doing burn outs or drive like dick Johnson you should be ok, I have a ej20t behind my stock 1600 beetle box.

kombikid87 - July 11th, 2014 at 04:17 PM

what about gear ratios worth changing 4th gear for lower revs on the highway?

gear boxes do blow up, yes people do can make them blow up too.

if you have a really beefy engine on a inadequate gearbox can blow at a drop of a hat.

I personally only ever blown one up, was a vw standard irs box but I was being a dick with that one.

A good box can take what ever you can throw at it. I personally wouldn't put a higher power engine if I didn't intend to up rate the box. after all why are we wanting higher power engine for? for looks or to use it?

How hard are you going to go?

I have an EJ22 with 1800 bellhousing/ clutch/ starter motor and a 2 litre box.

I like the 2 litre box ratio's, however did not need the cost of the 2 litre clutch and starter.

If you want to do traffic light race's then I would recommend the 2 litre setup. If you are only cruising, then the 1800 setup will be fine.

helbus - July 11th, 2014 at 09:46 PM

There is a 2 litre box for sale in the for sale section

kombikid87 - July 12th, 2014 at 06:51 AM

just a daily cruiser no racing have another car for that stuff haha

kombikid87 - July 12th, 2014 at 07:30 AM

few more questions :
Obviously it would be ideal for me to have a 2L bellhousing onto the 1800 box to allow for the bigger clutch or will the 1800 clutch be ok (taking into account i dont have a clutch yet so will need to purchase one which way would be better to go?)
whats the best engine mount system to use?
is it necessary to reverse the coolant manifold?
is there any VSS setup like the rjes one available locally ?(dont like the CV type one)
i will be using a 00-03 EJ25 ( as ive heard prior era engines tend to have head gasket leaking issues?) is there any other mods other then reversed throttle body that is needed to make it all work?
thanks for all your help
Cheers
Rhys

Or you could spend a bit more and get the 5 speed box that your motor came from the factory with. Lovely, matching gear ratios so it drives sweet and has a 5th gear overdrive. Bolt-in gearbox mounts and factory VSS already there.
The nicest EJ mount setup I've seen in a Kombi is using the original Subaru crossmember and mounts, with steel inner and outer plates bolting the crossmember into the Kombi chassis rails once crush tubes are welded in.

kombikid87 - July 12th, 2014 at 08:53 AM

Only problem i can see using that crossmember setup is the fact that my kombi will be lowered so will have clearance issues.
would love the 5 speed maybe in the future will go that way.

vdo make a vss that just fits into back of the speedo between the cable .
Just fab up your own mounts
radiator under floor
probably wouldn't get a heavy clutch.
I run stock 1600 beetle clutch plate and a Kennedy stage 2 pressure plate .

yer sweet ian had a gander at ur beetle a few years back in sawtell .
My next question being then as the engine im using come from a 2002 model will the inverted throttle body work with the idle speed control mounted on the manifold or do i need to reverse the manifold (reading this off the rkes website)??
cheers

ask Andrew todd , his not on here so often , but should be able to find him on FB , He made a black box so that you can even run a newer motor in your bus

+1

In most cases spending more gives you better value for money. This is a classic example.

Its luck of the draw with stock gearboxes, ians and mine for example are good luck flukes.

I had mine freshened up 14 years ago as I killed reverse and I wont say I'm easy on it but not dropping the clutch at every set of lights either.

it survived all those year of hotted up and supercharged vw engines and over 5 years of subi power and turning a lot of rubber too.
it showed no unusual wear when it was torn down to fit some goodies recently which surprised me considering I had never even checked the oil level in it.

the other end of the scale, I know people that have broken them with an N/A EJ20 and even stockish vw engines.
The budget allows I'd go subarugears straight up
buy once cry once as they say

kombikid87 - July 13th, 2014 at 07:28 AM

man if only that money tree would start producing some $100 notes id be laughing! all the watering and sewn nothing yet haha!
anyone have any other input into the reversal of the manifold? i see rjes do a kit which is relatively inexpensive but have also read that its a straight swap over new gaskets and slightly modify the aircon compressor bracket to mount the alternator inplace?
cheers
rhys

Subarugears - July 13th, 2014 at 10:28 AM

Why do you want to invert the manifold? There's enough room in there as it is isn't there? Or you can unbolt the manifold and bolt in on backwards if you need the room, flipping the alternator in the process. I believe this is the sweetest way of doing it.

Subarugears - July 13th, 2014 at 10:39 AM

Here's some pics of said EJ25 Kombi that uses the Forester crossmember and standard engine mounts, bolted to the chassis rails with lasercut brackets.
Doesn't look like it's lowered much - maybe a notch or two? (or just a heavy camper).

And there you go.....the throttle inverter...

This shows you the sort of ground clearance you get with that sort of mount setup. That's running a standard sump. It's not just for a Subarugears 5 speed install, even if you stayed with the VW box then you're in this sort of area.

Oh and don't get too excited about running a post 2006 CANbus motor with our little black box yet. It's only in the very early stages of testing. It works, but has a bit to go yet to iron out bugs and get it tested on all types of CANbus motors. I'd be using pre-2006 motors for conversions for now.

kombikid87 - July 13th, 2014 at 12:45 PM

Thanks mate for your response would be good to run the later model EJ25T with one of your boxes!!

kombikid87 - July 26th, 2014 at 06:45 PM

Hey guys
so the EJ25 dont run a AFM at all so im sweet to just got pod filter straight off the throttle body?
cheers

kombikid87 - July 27th, 2014 at 09:18 PM

Hey guys
Im reversing the inlet manifold at the moment cant see there being any hassels with this other then abit of the wiring and ofcourse the mounting of the alternator anyone got pics off this? easy to just chop up the aircon pump bracket and reverse it on this but what mount/adjusting mechanism on the opposing side? make a bracket and somehow mount in the adjuster off the power steering pump setup?
cheers

kombikid87 - July 31st, 2014 at 09:02 PM

hey fellas
just wondering whats size fuel outlet and return line inlet for the fuel tank?
cheers
rhys

helbus - July 31st, 2014 at 10:29 PM

What year is your tank? I used one of the two available tank breather outlet tubes for a return line

kombikid87 - August 1st, 2014 at 05:04 AM

its a 72 kombi. if i have to get a bigger fuel outlet welded on i may aswell get the return line fitting welded in aswell.
