Whats peoples opinion on better performance out of a EJ25 over a EJ22?
Only really had experience with EJ22 and like the fact of self Diagnosis and non interference if unfortunate enough to break a timing belt. Is a Low
km Ej25 sohc way better performance wise that a low km EJ22 ? Is it better to just go with 25"s in future conversions? Not interested in turbo . No
streeters mainly Baja's and Baja buses so torque is a factor.
Thanks
The old SOHC EJ22 is a pretty rugged solid workhorse that is non interference. Smooth low torque, simple diagnostics. 135hp. They are getting 'old' however there is no problem getting parts.
So I'm currently driving a T3 with an EJ251/252 engine and have done 2 previous conversions with EJ22E engines, yes the Ej25's easily out perform an EJ22. But EJ22s have ample power for a Baja or Baja Bus, even consider an EJ201(later 2 litre engine).
Not only does the EJ25 perform better than the EJ22, it also using considerably less fuel (if that's a consideration). An EJ20 would have more than ample power for a Baja - I have one in a heavy Kombi Camper and has plenty of power, just not enough torgue.

I'm currently building an EJ25 with EJ22 heads as in Joels thread...gotta be the the way to go for a kombi especially as my goal is baja beach exploring etc...done the turbo thing and that was great on the highway but no low down torque...but tempted also to go holden 3.8 V6
I'm doing minimal work on the block and heads i have...but valve should be good kissers!

and new blue belts can't hurt

even so the 200hp of the ecotec tempts...
