Kombi auto ratios

Hi. I see people advising on changing ratios for vw auto if going v6 but never mention it when going subaru motor? What gives? Is there a reason? I just bought a rolling shell 74 and thinking of subaru motors but want to keep the auto in my kombi.

4cyl do around 3000rpm at 100km/h. The V6 usually does somewhere around 2000rpm at 100km/h, so the change of ratio for the V6 is so that it revs about the same as it did in the donor car.

thanks or that...I think Subaru is way to go for my purpose then...

Here is a rather long thread on TheSamba about the 3.3 ratio that has been made. What size Subaru engine are you looking into getting?

not sure yet...open minded for any engine as none in car now, but would like to try and use modern gear and possibly run the A/C

So what does a normal kombi engine rev at?
I may yet go original if i find the right engine but i dont want a sluggish van....not a rocket either but good enough to go up hills etc cruising with family.
Also how do i identify what my auto is?

on another note, would the 2005 model Subaru impreza manual gearbox fit? As I am buying a complete car with EJ25 motor etc and it has good manual gearbox etc in it? Also I am guessing the shifter/linkage may be problematic OR has anyone used the auto Subaru boxes? I need to get new driveshafts anyway, so if that is a problem I was already up for that cost anyway..
