has anyone tried putting a T25 box in a bay?
Can this be done easy enough?
I need to replace my box anyway, so why not a 5 speed? T25 diffs have 4 spider gears too!
Does the bell housing have the same mounts for the engine?
Im already running an adaptor plate for the V6, van I bolt it straight up?
what ratios do T25 boxes have standard?

For many years now I have read quotes and heard people stating that the T25 boxes are really weak, especially the Syncro version. Can someone PLEASE
tell me exactly what is the weak point in them? And just as importantly, how do we remedy the situation.
This is something that has been annoying me for some time. Everybody is quick to say how poor they are but as yet there has been little written on
what the problem is!
Also, where are all the drivers of our vans who have had these transmission failures. Stand up and be counted I say!!!

I know a lot people in the VW trade, its what I have been told by them. The crown & pinion was such a problem for Hellbug he fitted a Baywindow
crown & pinion to his his T25 box, he also did a lot of towing so the his problem showed up sooner.
In the US they only use 4 speeds so they dont have the problems we had, I hate knocking VW products but seeing as your going to use a V6 behind it you
will most likely have problems.

Thanks fot your thoughts Steve. Is putting in the C&P from an earlier box a case of a simple swap? Or is there more to it than that. I also tow
about 800kg of camper trailer and 'stuff' behind my Syncro so if this weakness is as common as people say, I may well come across it sooner
than later.
I would imagine that driving style could have a large effect on the life of a transmission, doubly so with a more powerful engine????
I have been told that the VR6 in to a Syncro is quite a difficult swap which is a shame as I would have loved to stayed 'in family'.

or keep up the chase for a strong 2 litre / 1800 box?
at least a 2l/1800 box will bolt straight in.
another question, If a box is advertised as having Porsche drive flanges, does that mean I have to use Porsche C.V.'s?
if so, do the Porsche CV's bolt onto the Kombi axle? or do I have to change axles too?
although prob not a bad idea, just another expense I don't need.
I thought of a 5 speed when I had a gearbox problem a year ago. Nick from Volksparts in Canberra advised against it. Said I was much better off keeping the four speed in my '82 air-cooled camper. I was also keen on a synchro but he mumbled someting about lots of dollars, like 3,000, for the front and upwards to fix other bits if and when they let go. I settled on a Lockrite locking diff which has proved great so far. About 60000K on it in all types of country. There is a post about the Lockrite elsewhere. Posted by my son 242.

thinking about changing gear ratios but, something for a little more top end.
it needs a taller 1st anyway, as sool as you stand on the gas in 1st, it's straight on the rev limiter.
I was thinking on using a 1st somewhere between the 1st and 2nd I've got now, use my Albins standard 3rd as a 2nd, the Albins 0.70 4th in 3rd,
then an even taller 4th. shohld be able to cruise the highway about 140 kph at about 3000 rpm, and around the city 60kph at 2000 rpm in third.
make it kinda like a 3 speed + overdrive.
does this sound like a good idea?
remember, h.p. is not a problem.
