what is the best vw gearbox to run with a ej20T motor

I moved your post to a more suitable location.

A 6-rib VW kombi gearbox should handle it if driven sensibly.

Otherwise go for a Reno or porsche box. Check this forum for more details (use the search function).

No disrespect Wes, but a "built" TI box will do it too if the car is for the road....
Give Rancho a call.... I know of good results from them.
Forget Transform (they built ours 5 years ago...not very well either, died last year).
I have found it cheaper & quicker to get box built in the US & ship it back.
We ordered 2 (one IRS, one Swinger, both "built"), 5 years back and they were on our doorstep within a month.

Just my humble opinion....

no offence taken Humpty.

I just think the 6-rib box is a lot better value for money than a beefed up type 1 box. You gotta spend a fair bit on a type 1 box to get it up to the strength of a stock 6-rib.

Just my opinion.

So how much does a good qaulity type one box cost compared to a 2L box?? What do you have to do to them to make them stronger or is it just a matter of contrpling the right foot.

Ok...here goes...The prices are basic and by no means static.
A good used 6 ribber can be found here in Perth at the wreckers for around 600 clams (plus) no warranty. You are stuck with ratios and you have figure on fitting it into your car of choice somehow (if it is not a baywindow bus!)
What's the costing on rubber mounting something like this in a bug for instances Wes...I'd like to know, because I've thought about going this way too! You know, shifter box & shifter rod if mounted high, nose mount, bellhousing mount...etc.

A fresh stock rebuilt TI box will set you back about 1500 clams Aus. With a lot of secondhand parts.

A fresh rebuilt TI hot rod box like a "freeway flyer" from Rancho goes for about 690 clams US. Thats roughly 1600 clams Aus landed give or take.
This will have welded 3rd & 4th, welded shift forks, HD side plate, Superdiff (usually with a 4.12 R&P) and new everything inside.
Disclaimer: I haven't imported anything from the US in a while so I'm not up on the duty exchange.

It's all food for thought and there is always more than one way to do something!

That type 1 gearbox price of $1600 rebuilt with a super diff is pretty damn good. When I priced up that kind of box ages ago it was much more, but I was looking at doing it within Australia.

type 2 into type 1 gearbox mount kits are a little over $200 (rubber mounted ones). see the custom offroad website.

I first had a 5-rib kombi box. bought it for about $150. Got it fully reco'd for another $800 or so for a little under $1000 I had a tough little smooth gearbox. Brad now runs that box in his manx. He has trashed the hell out of it and it still runs fine. If I were to rebuild it again I would've put a 1600 0.82:1 4th gear in it for better highway cruising than the stock 0.89:1 4th.

I now run a 6-rib as I thought it will cope with the torque of the V6 in the heavy Baja a bit better. I spent a bit more on this one. Went for an Albins 0.70:1 4th gear set ($350), a late model Vanagon 4-spider diff ($200) and a rebuild. The gearbox had a few pited vital bearings which pushed the cost up. All up the 6-rib with 4-spider diff and custom 4th set me back under $2000. About twice as expensive as the 5-rib, but hopefully twice as strong. And from what I am told a heap stronger than a type 1 box.

This website has some good info about the various boxes

The spider gear pic gives you a good idea of size and strength differences

It is easy to mount a type 2 box in teh beetle. http://www.customoffroad.com.au  have a great rubber mounting kit and it comes with both straps and everything you need.
Modifying teh shift tube is also easy and takes about 30mins.

Walla type 2 box in for under $300 now mod ya axles $50 pr and off you go ...

This all sounds good.
Good to see a rubber mount kit is available. I haven't looked into this sort of thing for a while but I'm thinking of selling off my 1915 stuff and turbo stuff I have collected adn go the RS/WRX route...I just love driving my brothers Notch and I'd like it in my Bug....But I think I may have to raise the trans and move it forward to have a chance of getting it all under the decklid. I don't want to chop up the torsion housing like everyone else has.

Now....Where's my measure tape?
