i know that this question has probably been asked a million times but what are the gains of fiting a scooby motor ?
I have just been give a 85 model wagon with an 1800. The engine has only done 45000 and sounds and runs great. The engine in my 71 is getting a
little tired and is going to be in need of a rebuild soon. so it got me thinking rebuild or dump the scooby motor in.
Does the scooby need a brace across the front or will the bolts through the gearbox-adaptor plate be enough? What have you all found to be the best
cooling system, rad up the front or splits by the gear box or something else? now the most important question, now well does it go? i have a 1776 with
twin 40's at the moment and i am very happy with it. will the scooby motor be better, worse about the same?
thanks

is it an ea81 or an 82? the 81 is what i am putting in my bus. lightweight (a lot of alloy), about 85BHP, easily modified to around 100HP... rad is much easier to fit in bus then bug however.
personally, it sounds abit half assed to me. Sorry, but I dont think it's worth putting it in. Leave the subaru in one piece and save up for a
prpoer conversion while enjoying driving the subaru. You might get 100hp out of it with alot of work but it's very old (and not cool) technology.
:o
I'd want at least 150hp standard out of a motor before I even considered converting it into a bus. That would also justify the cost. Alloy v8s or
late model v6s and 4s are definitely the go.

its a ea81 and in answer to pete wood, i dont like 6's and 8's. Normaly i wouldn't change from the volkswagen engine but i do a lot of k's and i
tend to drive it hard so thats half the reason i am thinking of converting. Its only a ratty old bug that get lots of abuse,if it was one of the ones
i am doing up it would not even been an option as it has to be volks powered....

I thought it was a bus you were talking about so 6s and 8s are out anyway.
If it's a ratty old bug I spose it comes down to dollars and cents then.
The radiator is going to be the hardest part. Guess you need to figure out whether you want the hassle or not. Wes' baja is worth looking at. He put
the rad under the back seat and that seemed to work well, although he has said he needs to organise better ducting for high speeds.
Another thing to consider. I'm not certain if the bell housings are the same but, If you do this conversion then maybe it's easy to put a ea82 turbo
in it later. That would make the car really fun.
Just an idea......:thumb
ps. you'll probably need to clearance the sump too.
