need help with ej20 wiring
ratbug - October 5th, 2004 at 08:18 PM

Hey guys, just sorting out the ej20 loom and there is one wire i'm unsure of, its the blue/red stripe wire that runs to the ecu. Its a thick wire so I'm thinking it may be another power, but what? It doesnt appear to be on the ecu wiring diagrams. There is however a red/blue wire that goes from ACC to the clutch switch etc, but it doesnt go to the ecu on the diagram.
Thanks, Andrew

andrew i suggest going to autocraft subaru in parry st, newcastle behind marketown and next to gamers auctions. Marshall is the owner and knows everything about subarus, he used to b my mechanic, he also loves bugs as well and has one, said one day plans to put a ej20t in it. tell him wat ur doing and im sure he will be interested, but i reckon aski him and he'll b able to tell u

Andrew, you say this blue/red wire goes to the ECU, so what ECU connector & pin number is it? A photo would help.
The power from the ignition switch to the ECU is blue/red and comes in to connector B96 (has 16 pins) at pin 10. This wire supplies power to the ECU when the engine is cranking on start up.

Hi Sam, I never knew about a subaru specialist in newcastle apart form the one in cardiff. Might Have to have a look if i get stuck.

Hi Jenny, yeah i should have put a pic of the plug up striagt away would have been easier. I see the blue/red wire going to the IGN on some of the diagrams i downloaded off the net, however none of these match up with the loom I have. The only diagrams I have that match are the diagrams in the Haynes Legacy manual (1994 and later), I dont get any pinouts or plug drawings, just the schematic. Anyway, here is the wire in question, 3rd pin from the right.

Thanks, Andrew

Hmm... so is this motor EJ20 or EJ22, turbo or n/a & what year?

ratbug - October 8th, 2004 at 05:49 PM

Its an ej20, 1994-96? Series 2.

OK, I've checked all my wiring diagrams and draw a blank with those wire colours - no purple/violet. My motor is a pre MY97 model EJ20 n/a jap import. On the diagram that matches my loom that blue/red wire is the shield for the cam position sensor.

Do you have the connectors at the other end of the loom? if so you can trace the wire with your multimeter to find what connector it goes to.

I think seagull's loom was way different to mine too and I think he had purple/white wires. Perhaps he could help?

Here's a pic of my 16 pin ECU connector

Thanks Jenny. The subaru dealer that I got the engine from warned me that any wiring diagrams I find will not be 100% correct. They also said from experience that every loom seems to be slightly different, even from the same engine model and year. It looks as though this could be the case.

I'll have to try and trace the blue/redwire to the other connectors and try and work it out that way. On my loom, the violet/white wire goes to the transmission control box.

I must say I had bad dreams about the subaru ecu , in the end is was all to hard so I sent it to QLD to get sorted out , I have not started it yet but lost 3/4 of the wires .

Seagull - who did you send it to? and please let us know if you are happy with the job done.
Thanks.

I believe it was covered in this post. http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=29175

Their web site is here http://www.pms.net.au/

Thanks Jenny.
Can some one please tell me what an ignition module is?
Thanks.

ratbug - October 11th, 2004 at 05:59 PM

I've figured it out! Its the START wire, it goes back to a plug with 4 big conductors which must be the ignition switch plug.

The ignition module is a big transistor(s) which switches the big currents on and off to the coil(s) controlled from the ECU. Because it gets a big hot from switching high currents its external to the ecu bolted to a bit of metal to form a heatsink. Heres the ej20 one.
