Ignition Barrell and Key needed for Subie Swap????
type2nut - October 11th, 2004 at 10:18 PM

As the title suggests...
I have been told that some Subarus have a code on the ignition key and that the ECU will not fire up without this completion of the circuit.
Anyone know anything about this?
I am considering a 1999 Outback (EJ25). Where can I find out if I need to get these parts along with any associated wiring etc?

Thanks.

I do remember reading something about that some where although I think it was for the later models (WRX only maybe?) with AVCS, so I didn't really take it in as my setup is a pre MY97 model. I think it was because of the high theft rates of WRX.

If you are getting a front half cut then it will come with it. If you're stripping the parts from a wreck then just get those bits as well.

As far as I am aware the EJ 25 does not have it. The Later moel EJ20T's did ( after 2000). The later model WRX had those stupid key pads with auto arm as well.

I remembered where I read about that ignition kety requirement. It was for a 1998 turbo DOHC swap into a Speedster
http://www.ricola.co.uk/  click 'my car', speedster, engine swap details, subaru, 'to begin with'
In the 3rd paragraph he talks about it and gives a pic.

But like Brad said, it probably isn't applicable to the EJ25.
