looking at putting an ej20 into 68 squareback and am curious about engine height. Whether the turbo or na are different would help. vehicle is to be a work car so I'm thinking conversion will be cheaper than buying a forrester gt.
The only difference in height would be the stock WRX intercooler sitting on the top of the engine, other than that I think they're the same height. Move the intercooler or change to an air/water and place it some where else.
The intercooler doesnt actually sit on top of the motor..it is straight in front(or behind in subaru) off the throttle body. You would have to
relocate it, although it would probably sit nicely with minor cutting of the body...then duct air onto it and have a couple of thermo fans on top.
Maybe the radiator up front and the side vents for the cooler.
Or like Pete said.......water to air.

This will give you an idea of the stock IC placement.
thats sweet . Is the shifter setup easy to get hold of (for mid mount). As thinking of doing a midmount rx8 13b manx in the future. Cant stop playing with toys.
Any of you folks got a diagram of the EJ20T with the stock turbo and turbo manifold on top also with the Water to air intercooler. Would be very handy
for my investigations.
Cheers People

You will have to make a big engine 'box' to keep the 'engine out of the cabin' for a Square... if u know what I mean... Thats why a Fasty is
better for this conversion... you convert the rear load area into engine bay

Looking at for a Splitty actually.... I relise mods are required. I thinking probably have to go custome fuel tank for sure... just would mind knowing
whats required before i start.
Cheers
so can i assume that the intercooler just sticks futher out from the trottle body???
You can see from Peter's spyder that the intercooler isn't completely flat, they are angled slightly upwards...
Rich
Here a good pic to show the angle on the intercooler on my EJ20 TT
Out of interest are there any physical dimenesions quoted anywhere on the forum?

The only progression so far is just body work on the actual kombi... and collection of parts... esentially as slow as any good project :P
Dero,
I've just done a test fit of a EJ20T into a 71Bay. I have removed (cut out) the valance up and over the gearbox and the tray that holds the tank. Am
in the process of creating a new frame and enclosure in front of the engine compartment for the tank, fuel pumps, surge tank, battery and electronics
(separate compartments for each). This enclosure would take up the space that you would have for storage under the rear bunk in a camper of the rear
seat.
My bay had 930mm between the chassis rails (not sure about a splitty) and the motor fits in with about 50mm spare each side of the cam covers (the
widest point). The rear shroud (below the engine lid) mounts foul the engine when rolling it in with a gearbox attached but the trolley jack sorted
that out. Will be fabricating the crossmember on the weekend. I'll get some pics on the weekend to give you an idea of the space in the engine bay
now.
