You can retrace the way I drove home from the Butcher because of the Huge amount of oil gushing from my Subaru EA81 engine, Big end Oil Seal...

So does anyone out there have an EA81 in half decent condition sitting around. Maybe a Rebuilt one... Am I DREAMING......

But seriously I am looking to maybe throw in another engine while I rebuild this one or get a Rebuilt one and put that in.

What I want to know is, I currently Have the Subaru EA81 in the back of my Manx, Is there any other Subaru engines I should look out for while I am looking for a replacement.
I need a strait bolt in to my current adaptor plate onto my VW swinging box.

I have heard of EA82 is this the same...?
My engine is a 1800 what is the 2L equivilent...?
What other types of Subi's do i have the option to go with...?

Now legally I am not to sure about changing Engine numbers, Buggy has QLD Rego but I am currently in NSW. But I will cross thet brige when I get to it I guess, Advise on that would be a great help..

EA 81 is single cam, pusrod 1.8L. Also came as EA61 and EA71 (1.6L and 1.7L respectively). Always carbied, you can get a twin carb version and I heard a rumour of an EA81T (carbied turbo) but I have never seen one. There was never a 2L version of this engine.

EA82 is a completely different engine - its still 1.8L, but I think its SOHC instead of pushrod, and its always fuel injected. It did come in a EA82T, which is about 100kw or something. From what I understand its a pretty strong engine, but its an 80's engine and can be hard to find now. IT was extensively used in the Sportswagons up to 1994 and also in cars like the Leone.

I would imagine it shouldnt be too hard to get the EA81 rebuilt - lots of people still drive the old suby wagons.

A good Subaru resource is the Ultimate Subaru Message Board - do a Google on that, its got all sorts of stuff associated with the forums (like trouble shooting, wiring diagrams that sort of shite).

another real good source of info is ausubaru.com ea71 was a 1600 (i had one), never was a 2l version, but there was a warmed up version that but out about 120hp, might be worth trying to find out the specs and building yours to match :cool

Yeah Pete it is tempting, but that would not be a a bolt in Jobbie hey...
And i would have to get the buggy back up to QLD to keep it legal... hmmmm bit more power, lot of trouble I think it could be...
