Due to the hole in the sump from a wheelie in 2nd, I decided to shorten it while I had it off. Outback motosports? sell a sump that just has 1.5 inches cut off the bottom and a plate welded on. The sump was big enough that even with the 1.5 inches gone, the sump still can hold the recommended amount of oil(so they say)

I started with that intention and ended up with this.....

I have cut about an inch out of the middle and rejoined them, like a chopped bug(next project)
Ignore the shadow under the base, you can see the original drain plug, which stays the same...

The original bottom baffle in the sump gets cut out when it is shortened, athough it can be gound out and rewelded back at any chosen height.

The base section was cut with the sloping side being 2cm longer than the others. This protruding side could be bent horizontal, then covering the gap that would be left due to the bottom piece being significantly shorter after the cutting.(looks like a bullnose in the first pic)

Hi Matt,
it is not important how it looks, it got to work. Just make sure it is leakfree before you put it back under the engine.
I used gasoline to check mine.

How did it go?

also make sure you mod your picup to suit.

Pay attention to the dip stick tube as it is brazed in and if you weld near it will leak if you don't rebraze it.

How much shorter did it end up ?

The pickup will be braised as suggested, it will be too fiddly to weld. The two halves are still seperate, I just finished filing the surfaces and sitting them together for the photo. They will be tig welded later today. It will end up being about 1.5 inches shorter.

cor makes 85 mm shorter ones

Thats pretty short, I guess you need crazy clearance off road.For on the street, all you need is 40mm shorter. Its then inline with the oil filter and headers.

I was looking at the options of buying one for about $450 on exchange, although I wanted the car back on the road tomorrow and turn around on an exchange would have to be atleast a week. Figured I'd give it a go myself....if its wrecked, then get a second hand one, if it works....The car will be running in the morning.

why not with well cooling 5 cm shortened aluminium cast sump?
I know, most of you are aiming to do low budget conversions, but how many hours do you spend with such an oilsump?
How much capacity do you give up, by simply shortening the original sump. Mine´s capacity is 4,25 litres and I can tell you that it is very stabile and very well cooling the engine. You can easily lift the car by putting the lifter under the sump. Besides it´s looking more like a VW-related engine when you look from underneath. Especially for buggies where you can see the whole oilpan it´s to me a little ugly to have such a reworked Subi-melone.
The only problem is, that freight to AUS is about 50 Euro for one sump and about 85 Euro for a package of upto three sumps. But is this really a problem?

Martin, I think yours looks great, and will consider one in the future, I just wanted the car back on the road as quick as possible. Mine still holds normal capacity. I also have welded a 3mm skid plate on the bottom of mine, as they are not the thickest metal to start with.

I have to find the picture of the new one, althouh this is essentially what ours are like, although the new ones have a slight bootleg look and have profile cut top plates. They are about 45mm shorter and hold about the same as stock due to the slight flare and straight sides.

Fwooarr, these are sexy units. Great engineering idea being two piece. Price is 275 euro (about 460AUD). As Martin says its about 50 euro postage (85AUD).

There's been a few different versions of them. The current COR shortened sumps are laser cut steel, folded and TIG welded to shape. Quite a lot of labour involved to make them, hence the price.
