gerbie_rox - July 1st, 2005 at 04:33 PM

hey all!!!,

Yea look i think i posted sumthing like this before but i didn't get much of a reply. so im going to try again.
Im looking for the right engine for the baja im creating.
Im really fond of subi power. Now obviously this baja is going off road so.............what subi engine should i use.
I have an idea of a ej20 or ej22. I have read that the ej22 is easier with sump problems. But i don't know what i should do so........... can people please tell me what engines they like, can be any from any make, and tell me why they like it. Thanx all

P.S. This is for EVERYONE!!! With ANY engine

gerbie_rox - July 1st, 2005 at 06:47 PM

come on guys ANYONE, ANY ENGINE

MickH - July 1st, 2005 at 08:18 PM

Go with the EJ22.Heaps of parts/more power than the EJ20 and readilly available conversion parts. My Manx is getting one now.....http://www.netspot4u.com/~manxclub/gallery/AS0051/EngineBack

gerbie_rox - July 1st, 2005 at 08:25 PM

would it be worth a turbo if it's gonna be offroading a bit?

MickH - July 1st, 2005 at 08:29 PM

Why bother...more to go wrong.I doubt you will get a EJ22 complianced with a turbo...there is enough power there anyway:no::bounce

gerbie_rox - July 1st, 2005 at 08:32 PM

yea ok thanx

mayb ill put one in my subi i already have.

OK thanx.

Anyone else have an opinion???

there are now two cars with with the 200hp mazda v6. One buggy and one baja. Be worth considering this swop as well. Contact Bajawes about this conversion.

BTW, you might as well think about the EJ20 turbo as well, more power, you'll need a 2litre gearbox, but, if you want a turbo, then that's the motor.

gerbie_rox - July 1st, 2005 at 08:57 PM

yea but i have been told turbo isn't good 4 offraod

MickH - July 1st, 2005 at 10:14 PM

Anything with low down torque,EFI and a turbo if ya want some wank factor. If you want turbo you will need something that spools up quickly so you don't have to rev the guts outa the engine to get more power. The V6 sounds like what you want if you want heaps of low down torque.

keep it vw
they won't win a dyno comp but they do win lots of races

I think your choice will be also influenced by budget, mechanical knowledge and the abuse you intend to throw at the car.
There is nothing wrong with a turbo for what you want, just turn up the boost then short shift..although you wouldnt even need the boost up. The ej22 would also do fine as the v6 mazda.
The vw engine requires the least work(unless you build the motor yourself). If the 1600 is not powerfull enough for you, then getting alot more torque/hp can be expensive although being advised on a relaible combination for you application may be the hardest decision. My advice with a vw engine choice(cam, heads, size, compression etc) is to look at what people are actually using for off road , and make your decision from that. Opinions can fly thick and fast....so read alot and make your own educated decision on what will work in YOUR car!
Hang on..isnt this the non-vw conversion section!
P.S. All the suby's have a low sump.

Good Luck

my advice is go the suby.

The V6 is very good, but I wouldn't recommend it only you really know what you are doing, can do serious fabrication or are willing to pay a shop to do the fabrication.

My car required some pretty serious mods to fit the V6. I'm a mechanical engineer that specialises in custom machine design so it's not suprising I pulled the V6 off. I did it for the fun and challenge of it.

Troy (the other V6) paid Brad at customoffroad to do the real tricky bits of his V6 conversion, as well is using my adaptor plate / flywheel set-up and asking me lots of questions (he only lives 10mins down the road).

The suby's are a lot easier fit, and by the sounds of it Brad will start producing sections of kit to make the suby transplants easier. The suby will be cheaper and lighter and has ample low end torque and overall power.

I have the Subaru EA82 turbo in my beetle if i could do it again i ould put in the EJ20 or the EJ22 in. More power and torque. Never enough power.

Loads of the off-road racin crowd are running turbo set-ups with very good results....But as Matt and Brad suggest....It depends on what you want, how you are to use it and what wheel/tyre/suspension/driveline combo you intend to use....Turbo motors produce huge torque, but will it be where you want it? What it your style....Slow, low down grunt or max speed? Have you done any off-roading? If so, have you done any in a VW? If not, maybe you should hitch a ride with someone who has and try it out for yourself....

we should highlight the difference between the offroad racing crowd and us recreational offroaders.

the racers are competing against the clock and generally cover the type of terrain that allows you to maintain alot of speed. They don't really have any slow (less than 20kph) sections, and it would be rare for them to go up anything really steep or rutted. So for them obvously turbo power is good.

For us recreational offroaders trying to go fast simply gets you a speeding ticket or arrested, or worse yet you will crash into some other innocent person coming the other way. recreational offroading involves some slow sections, and challenging your mates to the biggest steepest rutted hill you can find. It's in these situations a supercharged or torquey naturally aspirated motor shows it's potential.
