Superbug Engine conversion info?
Boothy8188 - October 14th, 2005 at 01:52 AM

G'day,
I am new to all of this so forgive me if i am asking realy stupid questions. I own a superbug and am thinking of converting it to either a EJ20T or EJ22 set up as a turbo. I was after what i needed to complete this project successfully apart from an adapter plate? Also if i need custom engine mounts where can i get pre fab ones or photo's of an ADR compliant set to copy? And lastly what 5sp gearboxes mate up easily and are appropriate for around 200rwkw, also where to get an adapter plate to suit?
Thanks For any help!
Jimmy B

HEy mate, good to see you are considering a converion for your bug.

I have no idea about the engine mounts that you would need but as for the rest.

you should be able to get an adaptor plate from Sherman i think does them. (cant comment on the quality of the product) or various other places shoudl do them.

for transmissions. none will mate up easily.

there are 4 main options as far as i see.

1) - built t1 transmission (if you want 5 speed very pricey)
2) - build kombi box (only 4 speed i believe but can handle a lot of power, a guy in a kombi was running one in front of a 300rwhp 13bt rotary.)
3) - porsche transmission, there are various different options.
4) - Renault UN5. quite strong, 5 speed and comparatively cheap compared to a porsche box.

Hope some of this helps .

Anthony

Where do you live?? It will cost you about $4000 total if you are willing to attempt it yourself. Buzz me on 0416 115993 if you want me to run through it all, or you can come see my car and whats involved.

Boof.. this bloke sounds like an enthusiastic beginner. Don't break his heart or his spirit by giving him unrealistic $ expectations...

Why is that an unrealistic $$$$ expectation??? If you are prepared to do ALL the stuff yourself,it can be done.

Money isnt really a problem i have around 6-7 grand to spend on this conversion. I can get the plates at many places and with the engine is it a better idea to buy just a front cut or an engine and then all the parts seperate. What porsche boxes fit and where would be a good place to source them fom and where would be a good place to get this renault box?
Thanks Again
Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,G50 will need some work fitting but is a good option. The Reno BoxesUN5 are my option but hard to get because lots of buggy Racers used them.Ive had quotes from $500 to 2500.These boxes take over 500hps without any mods.To source one of these boxes ring Reno Spares or any one that deals with them.JVLRacing

Hi Boothy8188,

a Porsche gearbox type 915 is sufficient for an EJ 20 T. My colleague is driving with nearly 300 EJ20T-PS on this tranny. They stand upto 350 Nm easily.
Renault is a good option too, but much harder to install into Beetle. As far as i know there is no bellhousing existing, that fits the Subaru-engine. Might be that someone offers an adapter. On the other hand the UN is a very long gearbox. But it is true, it stands very strong engines (more than 400 Nm).
I offer conversion parts for Porsche gearboxes. I can offer you short nose cone, traverse and axle flanges for the 915. With these parts you can easily install the 915 into the beetle, without loosing any space.
Have a look on my site http://www.bugat5speed.de  and look for "Angebot" and for "Projekte". There you will see the stuff (flat aluminium cast oilsump for Subaru also).

Cheers Martin
