Q on 930 gearbox

this gearbox is within my budget but I'm wondering how the clutch would work (hydrolic maybe?)

This would be able to handle around 300 HP easily and is only 4 speed so it won't be much longer than a type 1 box.

anyone?
and is the bolt pattern on this box the same as a type 1 box (I assume it is but am not 100% sure)?

Hi

I looked into using one. They are about 4,000 - 5,000 used, the ratios are way to tall, I think I was quoted about 1300 per ratio by Albins, soon starts looking like a 10,000 gearbox, I went G50, ratios are much more sensible. The 930 even though its 4 speed is still a big box. Both boxes use the same bolt patern as all aircooled VWs.

Are the ratios still to tall for an EJ20 TT engine? I'm not talking about putting it on a type 1 engine.

Steve's research was for using it with his STi engine...

what gearbox would you guys recommend me getting then?
The engine is a '99 EJ20TT and have 18" wheels (don't know if that is important)

We are both using 5 speed G50s...

ok, and any particular year or something I should look for when purchasing a G50 5-speed? or are they all the same?

I've got a later one, as used in 964 and onwards and they have a different front mount, it's more like a donut rubber bushing. I think I'll be able to easily make a mount for this which will then bolt on the the bottom inside the tunnel

Big lump on the side of the trans which means some serious slimming of the right framehorn!

The early ones mount like earlier 911 boxes, using a transverse mount which has the bushes incorporated.
Best pics for this are the ones on Wes' page for Reub's car...

The G50 is probably overkill for our levels of power but it will be nice to fit and forget. They shift much more nicely than the earlier boxes as Porsche moved away from their own synchro design. If you hunt aroudn you could find one with an LSD.
I found this good site for ratios: http://www.ultima-canam.info/utips.htm

You could always get a 2l bus box re-geared and that should stand up to the abuse...

thanks for the pics ricola. My engine makes 280Hp stock but when I have a box that can take the abuse I'll be tuning it to over 350Hp for dragracing and possibly adding NOS So having an overkill gearbox would be nice.

Can I still use the Kennedy flywheel +pressure group and clutch that I have on my type 1 box now with that setup or will another custom flywheel be needed?

ricola - October 18th, 2005 at 04:15 AM

Myself and Steve both have type 1 conversion kits so will be modifying them to use VW style clutches and to take Porsche ring gears. Steve is planning on a Saab release bearing and I am looking at making a mechanical arm and keeping the cable for simplicity at the cable end. Not sure what I'll end up with! Kennedy did quote me for a new flywheel but it was very expensive, that's before you have taken out a new mortgage for a Porsche clutch!

PS have you got any more up to date pics of your car?
